I recently have discovered I have depersonalization disorder. It's a relief but at the same time discouraging. Yet another thing wrong with me. Two of the most disturbing symptoms are you don't feel connected to the person you see in the mirror and you feel like your memories belong to someone else. I am 53, so we are talkingvdecades of knowing something was wrong
With me but had no words to describe what I was feeling. Finally having an answer is such sweet sorrow as they say. |

I think that's good news! It's not "good" that you have depersonalization disorder, but it's good that you finally know what's wrong with you. The Dx will probably make the treatment process a lot smoother now that it's clear what you're struggling with. Just don't let labels define who you are.

I find that since I have received my label...I use it now as an excuse...well, I'm Borderline Personality...that is why I treat you like ***** sometimes..and that makes it ok...lol...not really but I have been finding myself doing this more and more. |

A label comes with a well known narrative. My therapist says what we think is all stories, so go ahead and make a story that allows me to feel stronger, or any other helpful quality.
You sound self-reflective, which will be a big asset. With a dx that explains your experiences, it could be time to seek effective treatments and other persons living with this same type of awarenss or perception. Self acceptance, pride and love can help with feelings of confidence. Get feedback from people who love and appreciate you as you are. This is still a distressing time, but after a useful diagnoses, the healing path can begin. Lots of big hugs! |

I kind of wish doctors could just say we all have "mental illness" and then just treat the symptoms. That's pretty much what they do anyway (treat the symptoms). So, don't let yourself get worried about the label. I have 3 labels on me and I sometimes worry I'll have another one thrown on me, too. Don't let yourself get sucked into the stigma of mental illness. You're going to get better treatment now, so try to reassure yourself with that. ((HUGS))
