Fell off the wagon in a big way a few weeks ago - self harmed to the point where my SO took me to the emergency room for stitches and maybe sedatives to knock me out. As most of us are (I'm assuming) I was terrified of being sent to IP so I was as honest as possible with the crisis nurse I spoke with while omitting what I knew would get me put in IP.

Anyway, they ended up sending me home and making me an appointment with a new pdoc. Went to the appointment and he's convinced I'm NOT actually bipolar - or at least exclusively bipolar, but that my primary dx is borderline personality disorder.

Cue an unexpected identity crisis where bipolar has been such a big part of my life and identity over the past 6 years that I'm not sure how to deal with this?

Did your pdoc explain why he thinks you have BPD instead of bipolar? I recommend talking it out with your new pdoc. I think that will help you come to terms with your new diagnosis.

I also had a bad reaction with i found out i had borderline and bipolar. I also got the borderline diagnosis after self-harm. I find my borderline traits only come out under stress. If things are going well they don't really bother me. Plus, you're eligible for DBT which many people swear by. I couldn't tolerate it because it made me hm but it's worth a try.
