Looking for a med to cut the mania. Have tried Latuda, Lamictal, Trazodone, Geodon, Brintellux, Neurotin, Lithium and Seroquel. Nothing is working. Seroquel works the best but I can't stand the side effects of weight gain and grogginess. Need to offer suggestions to pdoc this week when I see him.

Seroquel is for depression, i believe. I'm currently on saphris, an AP for sleep and it's for mania. I haven't had a manic episode in years but it definitely calms my hypo down...unfortunately Best Med for Mania

Invega cut that **** down for me. Haven't been manic or mixed for any length of time for coming up on two years. They have pills or you can get the monthly shot. My pnurse says they've come out with a three month shot but my insurance doesn't cover that yet.

For me, it's clozapine. I've been pretty stable ever since being on 200mg.

I tend to be more hypomanic than I am depressed, and I would love to find something to stabilize me even more than I am now (without side effects). My pdoc told me I can take a little extra Risperdal if I feel really hypomanic at night, and it works. Here's what I take:

Lithium 900 mg
Latuda 120 mg
Trileptal 1500 mg
Risperdal 1 mg (sometimes 1.5 when I can't sleep due to racing thoughts)

I also take Bee Pollen (supplement) which will knock out my hypomania in about 30 minutes. I know it sounds crazy, but it works. I take it only as needed with food because I think it irritates my stomach.

Has Invega caused you any weight gain? I may have to switch off Latuda, but I really need to watch my weight. I have already lost 60 lbs, and I need to lose more.

I'm BP and take Seroquel. I think it's an anti-psychotic.

As for the original question at hand. Perhaps we tend to have this backwards. Is it not for our doctors to suggest medications to us and not vice versa?

I've taken Seroquel for depression in the past and it can be used in this manner.

I agree that the doctor may have the best resource since they are the experts in this area. However it doesn't hurt to bring up a suggestion, and maybe he or she will agree or maybe not, but hopefully there is also an explanation why so one is better educated on what will or will not work.

A double dose of Zyprexa does it for me every time. It won't make you gain weight if you just use it as a PRN on a very short-term basis.

I'm also on invega sustenna. It helps a lot, I haven't had any mania or nymphomaniac since being on it and it hasn't caused weight gain.

Thanks a lot everyone. My pdoc asks me what has worked in the past. He's suggested depakote and zyprexia. I think I'll ask him if I can take zyprexa prn. I'm very vain and don't want my hair to fall out with depakote. Maybe if I only take Zyprexa prn I won't gain wt. I have lost about 10 lbs and it was very hard so don't want to gain back. I wonder if the meds add wt by themselves or if they just make me hungry so I eat more.

I take Geodon, Topamax, Adderall, and Brintellix......it's all about the cocktail working together.

I liked my combination of trilafon 2mg x4 daily, and trileptal 150mg x3 a day (one is normally used for schizophrenia but worked for my common bipolar delusions well. I am manic much more then depressed.
