I call both of mine by their first names. (I see a DO for pdoc and PhD for therapy). I ask because although many of my pdoc's patients call her by her first name lots of other people seem to find it really strange. In the hospital I've had people almost correct me because they (the nurses) call her Dr. ________ and so when I say "well, FirstName says that this med is bad for me" they'll respond "Dr. NotFirstName would have to answer that, with a lot of emphasis on DR."

My pdoc has been treating me with monthly visits and usually an email every month or two (more when things are bad) for 14 years. We have a strong bond and I think the Dr. thing would be weird by now.

Just curious what others do.

I usually call my pdoc's Dr. Whatsyourface....therapists tend to allow me to call them by their first names. My very first therapist was a PhD so I would call him Dr. Whatshisface.

my pdoc has been the same for 13 years at least and has always been dr. orazio to me. She can be very authoritarian to me. I am afraid of authority figures.
I need her.
I don't have a tdoc right now...haven't had one for a while now. can't afford one.

I call my T (a PhD) by her first name (although for a long time I just didn't call her anything lol...but I've been seeing her so long -- on and off for almost a decade, and we're at the point where I can text her...in fact, she asked me to text her today, so I feel first name is appropriate).

I call my pdoc Dr. LastName. It would be completely and utterly weird to call her anything else because she is just very formal. Even when we talk about my T she'll say Dr. LastName and then I'll say it as well to match her, even though that's not what I actually call my T myself.

Dr. D for my pdoc. First name for one therapist. Haven't called my second therapist anything yet. But you can't really call them "Dr." if they're not one.

Pdoc I call Dr ... and T I call by first name. I hesitate to use either names and tend to avoid saying anything but 'Hi'. I guess that is the PTSD playing up as I tend to want to avoid real contact with people as I have been so hurt in the past.

If they are a Dr, I default to Dr unless they ask me to call them by their first name.

Call pdoc "Dr. _____ (last name)" and call my T by her first name. Well, I don't really call either of them anything, there's no need to say their names since I'm one-on-one with them, but if I did use their names that's what I would say.

I call both pdoc and T my their first names. However for my pdoc I do use the formal "you" (even though he's repeatedly told me to use the informal - but that feels weird).

I've never thought about this before. I don't believe I've ever addressed my PDoc as anything. Maybe because it is one on one. When I've referred to them with others I've definitely addressed them as Doctor YadaYada. I've definitely called my psychiatric nurses by their first names. I've never had a good enough relationship to really do otherwise with my Pdoc - just lukewarm and sub-par.
For me...I suppose depending on both the comfortability and their level of laxness (is that a proper term?) I could go either way. Definitely wouldn't shun a first name basis.

I call my pdoc and my therapist by their first names.

It's kinda funny... When I go to check in for my therapist (PhD), I just say his first name, but they always correct me and say "You mean Dr. [Doctor's name]?" I'm like, "Yeah, that guy." lol.

What do I call my pdoc? *laugh* I refer to her as shrinky-poo, but not to her face. I usually call her "Doctor" but sometimes use her first name.

I call my pdoc, Dr.F and my T by her name. This is pretty natural especially since my pdoc is an older male and my T is almost my same age female, so almost like a friend. But let me not be under the disillusion that she is actually my friend

Interesting thread. I'm an old school, old lady who's worked in allied health field forever (no MD after my name).

I've always from day one in my career used formal titles for MD/PhD/DO people until invited to do otherwise. Mostly out of respect, but also because I believe people get to choose how they prefer to be addressed. Just me. I HATE when someone decides to rename a Susan as Suzy, or Daniel as Danny!

Two pdocs in my life I've called Dr. Last name.....and never been invited to use a first name. Which is fine, just write me the correct medication and dosage, thank you kindly!

I followed pattern with my current and only T into the second year of our sessions. One day, she casually said, ya know, you're my only client who calls me Dr. Jones.
Well, who knew?
So that's how she became Mary.
Kinda silly that she didn't mention she prefers first name earlier, I think......

Dr. Awesomesacue reminds me of one of my more embarrassing moments with my pdoc.

The first time I was on gabapentin I had to be put on a high dose quickly and I was groggy and out of it for weeks. I tried to send an email to my friend Amy that referenced "Dr. Brain" as I called her on my blog. Unfortunately my email auto-entered the name of my pdoc rather than Amy and I sent it to her. So the next time I saw her she wanted to know who Dr. Brain was......so hard to explain.......
