I hope I don't sound weird, does anyone like, or know of, movies with characters with mental illness? I saw one a couple of nights ago called Enter The Dangerous Mind (aka 'Snap'). It's a little scary and violent in some parts, but I can understand why it was made that way.

Great movie. It's about John Nash, Jr and he had schizophrenia

I always loved 'Girl, Interrupted' with Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie.

Beautiful mind is one of the best movies ever. It inspires me and gives me tremendous hope, or can trigger me, depending on when I watch or think about it. He figured out a way to "know" his hallucinations aren't real, saved his beautiful marriage, kept working beyond all obstacles in front of him. Great movie.
Thanks for this!

Another vote for Girl Interrupted. Benny and Joon is another good one.
Thanks for this!

I loved Benny and Joon too!!

Another movie (well, it's a four hour mini series) done in the 70s with Sally Field and Joan Woodward called 'Sybil' is a good watch. The total character suffers from multiple personalities.

I don't know if this strictly counts as a movie about mental illness but I also highly recommend Donnie Darko. The title character is often considered a paranoid schizophrenic.

Infinitely Polar Bear. Watched it for the second time yesterday. (I've actually been putting together a post about it today, but computer froze. Hopefully I can finish it tonight.)

I also liked The Soloist with Jamie Fox playing a man with schizophrenia.

Another vote for Benny and Joon. Sweet movie.

(Ye gawds, I hated SLP. But I shall refrain... )

I like thirteen. And I like manic. It's a movie about a kid with an anger problem who gets put in the psych ward. There's violence in it though so be prepared for that.

I also like more light hearted stuff like analyze this and that movie with jack Nicholson....omg what was it...where he has ocd...as good as it gets.

The one that flew over the cuckoo's nest I like. Also mentioned are Silver Lingings with Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawerance and Girl Interrupted and Thirteen. Stephen Fry's documentary is good too

Benny and Join was really cute from what I remember, but I don't think they had mental illness so much as they were developmentally delayed... Which is very different. Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly though.

A great classic is Ingmar Bergman's Through A Glass Darkly.

I love Girl, Interrupted and Benny and Joon, too.

I just want to add another vote for A Beautiful Mind, even if you don't have schizophrenia or want to watch a movie about schizo, it's just an incredible movie on its own, very powerful and moving.
Silver Linings Playbook was good but a little cheesy at times, I felt.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Or is everyone on this forum too young to have seen it?
