I'm such a huge dork, but apparently I don't look like one.

I dress in nice, fashionable clothes everyday. I pretty much keep up with the latest trends...

...and yet I work as a software engineer. I love tech stuff, etc.

Whenever I tell people my job, they're like, "I never would have guessed. You don't look like you'd be a software engineer."

I'm the biggest dork on the planet, though. I love Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc.. In my free time, I like to hack software and program hardware to create gadgets. I also like to write software (duh, cos I'm a software engineer). I play video games sometimes.

My appearance does not match my interests!

You, sir, are a nerd but I like nerds.

And I am both a geek and a nerd. I am always the type to befriend those with higher intelligence with careers and interests that expand and educate the mind. For the geek side, the biggest embarrassments would be my hobbies surrounding cartoons (or anime) that are targeted for my generation. Plus video games, like Fallout, make me one happy person. And I am also a geek for owning autographed stuff from someone famous (even locally) or something they owned personally for a time.

And for some reason, I want to own bizarre artifacts from the past because they would make great conversational pieces.

I own a Xbox One but one of my friends said I should own a PS4 (and he may be right).

Haha. Yeah I'm a dork. My husband and I watch star trek. No need to elaborate. I also have a geek out tendency, like when you laugh so hard you start crying and people look at you and tell you it wasn't that funny.

I'm a dork In The sense that I'm socially awkward. But I'm not into geeky stuff at all. I'm so boring lol.

Been a geek my whole life. Worked in IT 20 years. Routers, switches, firewalls, servers, and workstations. Done some coding as well. What is your favorite language? I prefer C#. I've always liked C though.

You want to talk about being a geek! I have a whole bunch of Star Trek memorabilia, including the plates from the Bradford Exchange. I can't believe I am admitting this!

I believe whether you like Star Wars or Star Trek best makes an awful lot of difference. Doesn't it?

What do you think I'd prefer and why?

Edit:
I'll makespawn a separate thread.

yes! I love coding and organizing my folder hierarchies and reading in the bathtub in the dark with my headlamp I have really ugly glasses that I only wear at home (and I mean actually ugly, not hipster ironic 'ugly'). And I'm about to get my PhD, which I guess is pretty nerdy. But I don't 'look' like a dork out in public either...my style is weird, kind of like a mix between Grimes and Chloe and 90s grunge (?) I guess I'm a bit of a tomboy too.

I prefer C++, but I code in C more often than not. I just dislike C because it's so low level... but implementing a C compiler is easier than implementing a C++ compiler, so I suppose that's why (or partly why) my company prefers to use C? We build multiplatform libraries, etc..

I also do some Java, but it's only natural for me to do it, as the syntax for Java and C++ are very much alike. If you can do one, you can pretty much do the other if you take the time to learn the differences between the two languages. I think Java is pretty slow compared to C++, though, and I don't like that you can't use pointers.

What are you getting your PhD in? I studied cultural anthropology in University and am going back next year to study for my masters and PhD in either religion or archeology (I haven't decided yet).

I am a self-proclaimed dork, and a proud one at that. Most would classify you as a "nerd" or "geek", I believe, and there is a difference. Dorks have all of the social awkwardness of a nerd or geek with none of the intelligence.
Most don't assume me to be a "dork", for reasons I am unsure of, but my origins are of the most dorky. An inability to understand others, crippling social anxiety, complete unawareness of "trends", and a healthy dose of teasing are what molded me into the overly-self-aware, skeptic, sarcastic b**ch I am today. Most assume me to be a "goth" because I am drawn to the morbid and dark, but to call myself "goth" would be to give the false impression that I like people enough to get into groups with them. Why, dear Midday, call yourself a dork, then? Would that not communicate the same thing?
Quiet, you!
I don't really think a persons interests classify them as "dorky", or any other label for that matter, as anyone can enjoy anything. Rather, I feel it is a shared set of character traits which would classify one as a "dork". So, perhaps you are a dork. I don't know you. This was a rather pointless rambling, wasn't it?

I'm a dork in the similar sense that you are. I love video games, have all the consoles, used to play WoW, love harry potter, LOTR, game of thrones, star wars, all that shizzzle. But people never expect it because I'm 6'4 and atheltically built. Played sports, train in boxing and mma, and into other things like that. I don't like to stick to labels. I try to keep an open mind and not stick to a certain group.

Did you ever do Pokemon? I played the Pokemon games. Those were the best. I had all the cards too.

Everyone else in school had a gameboy and we'd trade pokemon during recess. We also would play pokemon cards with each other after school

It was 1st grade, so I was 7 at the time lol. Little did I know I would become the dork I am today. Pokemon was just the beginning! Muahahaha

Edit: I suspect most people here were too old for pokemon when it came out. I was alive during the golden era of pokemon!

Edit 2: I do not play pokemon anymore. I stopped when I was like 10.

My brother looooved Pokemon. He was always really difficult to get out of bed in the morning but for a good few months all I had to say was Pokemon is starting! And he would jump right up and go out in the living room to watch it. He had all the cards too. This was when he was about 7 as well.

When I was 23ish, I acquired a game boy color. I started playing Pokemon red. It ended up being the only video game I ever finished. I loved it. My husband loved Pokemon too, he would play all the games on his DS.

Any board gamers or people into role playing games?

I've played a lot of D&D in my day and am learning how to play Rolemaster. Also into Euro board games. My absolute favorite is called Britannia. I also enjoy Advanced Civilization (By Avalon Hill...not to Sid Meier Civ)
