Several months ago when I was hypomanic from medication changes, I was drinking everyday. Could not stop me from stopping by whole foods for a drink or 2 before heading home. It was like a compulsion, 5 weeks straight... I thought that I had become an alcoholic. I was researching asking for naltrexone to help decrease urges. My pdoc would not prescribe it for me because I would not agree to total abstinence. I was going to order it on line, but did not.
So anyway when I finally went back up to geodon 80mg twice a day, I became sane again and able to have Alcohol free days.
whew.

If there are different reasons (or settings), maybe you can first start to lessen your use of alcohol for one of these reasons, maybe the lowest-hanging fruit, and so on, for each reason/condition.

That's what I tried with nicotine (though based on different settings) but I just don't really want to quit smoking, honestly, but I think something like that might work. Maybe not.

But making your progress visible is (I think) very important, like bizi does.
Thanks for your concern and input. I drink when manic, depressed and mixed. Right now I am spiralling so it is difficult not to drink as my care factor is near zero. I sent a text to my T and hopefully he will come back with some sound advice. As I have SI I may end up in hospital

I am sorry you are feeling this badly.
What has helped in the past?
sit in the grass and feel nature?
Go for a walk in the fresh air.
put on some of your favorite music?
play with a pet, someone elses if you don't have one.

Thanks. Walking outside helps a bit and I am going for a walk with my Mum today so that should be good for me. It will be by the beach so even better as I love nature. Music is almost always on. I find it calming. I don't have a pet but wish I did. Every Sat I get to play with my sisters kitten so I get my animal fix weekly. In the past, when I am like this, I find distraction and meds helpful too. Both of which I will be doing today. My T wants me in hospital so I guess I will try to get admitted as I am not that safe.

I don't drink very often now. Not a huge fan of feeling drunk. I'll usually have a couple beers or a fruity drink maybe once a month.

I've gone through 2 episodes of depression/mixed where I self medicated with alcohol. So I know if I start drinking a lot suddenly, there's an issue.
