Fun fact: Irish people with pale skin, light eyes and red hair are actually predominantly Norwegian genetically. The first cities of any size in Ireland (Dublin, Waterford, Cork, Wexford and Limerick) were founded by Norse settlers during the second Viking age between 900 and 1000 AD.

Indigionous Celts had dark hair in contrast to their light skin, often with blue eyes. Modern people in Ireland with these features are the descendants of original Celtic tribes that existed before the Viking invasion. At least 40% of the Irish population has dark brown hair, red hair is actually much less common at around 10% with blondes being more common at around 15%.

But do you have any idea whether there's a likely common origin (or maybe a few) of red hair?

I'm probably have only some fake/modern Celtic blood anyway, but I don't know if it's very likely to be Norwegian. As far as I can trace or have traced back it's definitely somewhere from the northwest of France, but frankly I don't know whether the "Celtic" appearance/genes, if it's that, came from there or it got mixed in only later.

Ireland was mostly settled by Norsemen who originated from what is modern day Norway. Unlike raids in modern day England, Scotland and Wales there isn't much written history of who led the expansions into Ireland, it's mostly just known that they originated in Norway, though some Swedes and Danes also came to Ireland. Norwegians are more known for red hair and the ruddy / pinkish complexion found in Ireland today than their other Scandinavian counterparts.

As for northwest France, what you are describing is Normandy. The Normans, literally 'people from the North' settled here in the 10th century led by Danish born Rollo established the first Norse settlement in the area in 911 AD. While Rollo was Danish both Danes and Norwegians settled in Normandy. Rollo swore fealty to King Charles III and was given that region of France in exchange for defense against further Norse invasions. (Also interesting fact, Rollo is great, great, great grandfather to William the Conqueror (William I of England who is one of the ancestors of the current British Royal family). Rollo and his settlers converted from Norse Paganism to Christianity and intermarried with Frankish women, so modern day people from that area of France have both Norse and Frankish blood.

That would explain my cousin who looks like the living embodiment of a tall, broad, brawny Viking with blonde hair, and a red beard....all that missing is the horned hat. My daughter has red hair, blue eyes and very pale skin.so the Norwegian is strong in us. Maybe Celt too?

Interesting. When I was little, my hair was very dark brown, almost black. It lightened somwhat to dark brown. Pale skin (does not tan, burns very easily --I hate beaches and summer as you can imagine, lol. And love the t-shirts that say, "The sun is trying to kill me!"). And green eyes. The Irish side (my dad's) is from western Ireland. In fact, my grandmother was born there about an hour's drive from the largest and most populous gaeltacht. Limerick is a bit closer, but, as the rest of the geneology is northward, and Limerick is to the south, it seems less likely to be a factor. Also, geographically, Limerick would seem to be a bit of an outpost from the others you named.)

So I'd say Celtic Irish is a solid bet.

My sister? Strawberry blonde. (Weirdly enough, I have a very clear memory of my Irish grandmother calling it that -- and I was only 3 or 4 at the time(!)) But, my sister looks like my mother (freakishly so), and that's the English side.
Thanks for this!

White, European mix, mostly german and irish.

All of my siblings are tall and blonde, from the german genes. I am short and red-headed. My Mom told me she found me at the bottom of a rainbow, but the siblings were dropped off by the stork.

Pennsylvania Dutch (Pennsylvanische Deutch) or Pennsylvania German. Speak some German and know a few phrases from the PA Dutch language. My grandfather could write and speak it.

Sorry if I'm intruding!

I'm a first generation Canadian. All my family is from former Yugoslavia, now Bosnia. Except for someone or some people hundreds and hundreds of years ago... from Montenegro (also former Yugoslavia). The only person in our extended family from elsewhere is my uncle (married my mum's sister). He's from somewhere in the UK.
I speak better English than Serbian, I always make mistakes with conjugations. It's so complicated, even more so than French which I also speak (but I think I'm losing it).

My great-grandparents emigrated to the NE US from Suceava (Romania), Galicia (a small kingdom that once straddled the border between Poland and Ukraine), Lodz (Poland) and Naples (Italy).

Out here, that makes me just another another stupid haole.
