So, my new GP is really awesome. Usually when I go to the doctor's office, everyone thinks I'm a psycho because I'm bipolar. The nurses usually make me feel bad by having me explain my medications, then explain the bipolar diagnosis... which is when they go "oh sh*t. You're obviously f***ing nuts. Pls don't kill me!!" and basically cower in fear or tilt their head to the side, giving me an unsure, confused look because they find me medically intriguing.

With this new GP, none of that happens. On my first visit, she had read up on my entire patient history, which meant she never once had the bipolar conversation with me (which is a convo I used to have EVERY SINGLE TIME i had an appointment). I hate having to reexplain psychiatric history when the history is in my f***ing medical file!!! For once, someone had the brains to read my medical history. AMAZING

Today, she went over my medications with me because she was prescribing me Lipitor. She warned me of the possible side effects and all that, and told me how it could reduce the efficacy of my current psych meds. She also said Latuda sucks because it ruined my cholesterol.

The best part? None of the nurses harassed me about the BP diagnosis!

You must be joking! Doctor's like what you describe just do not exist!

I am so tired of the poor reactions I get from every Dr. I have seen.

Yeah I know! I was shocked that I found a NICE doctor. Most of them are evil

I used to think my old doctor was good (minus the whole "you're a psycho because you're BP" part), but this new doctor is on top of her game. She actually explains things to me instead of saying "this is how it is; accept it"

My gp just sometimes asks how I'm doing mood wise. Never any awkwardness just caring.

I loss my GP and had to go to a county clinic...wow talk about over reaction! They had gotten my records and the GP I saw insisted they could not see me unless I talked to their pdoc ....I guess they wanted to be sure I wouldn't shoot them up( I wasn't on medication at the time because I had gotten fed up with the maze I had to go though not having insurance and all) I was relatively stable at the time but that didn't matter. I saw their pdoc and she agreed with me that I didn't require meds at that point.

I love my gp. No nervousness around me. Always super friendly, and the nurses are really nice. My last gp couldn't wait to get out of the room with me, that's why I left. She was always so anxious around me and it was obvious.

Wow, that's especially sh*tty and quite offensive. My doctors were never that bad. They just look at me and think I'm a psycho, but they don't tell me I'm not allowed to see them unless I see a pdoc.

I'm glad you found someone who is professional. Just because we have BP does not mean we are specimens to be dissected or curiosities to be gawped at. I'm sorry you had to go through that at your former PCP's office...those nurses were way out of line.

I came out to my dietitian yesterday, and surprisingly she was totally cool. She must have read my records because she didn't seem surprised. She obviously wanted to know the impact it has on my diet, but other than that I didn't have to explain anything. I was so relieved.

After my psychotic break situation last january, I went to my GP because I wanted to make sure there wasn't something physically wrong with me. I told the nurse I had just been in the hospital.

Nurse: Awe. Depression?
Me: I have bipolar disorder. I had a psychotic break.

(Why I was so honest no idea!)

Nurse: Oh...

And I've never been treated the same since. I go in completely normal looking and acting and am treated like a leper. I hate it. I need a physical and haven't scheduled one because it's so awkward.

My Pulmo is also my GP now.
When I ask too much sshit, he says . "I'm not discussing that any further." "Hey you aren't, are you." "No." The end. I like someone as strong as me. Or more.
