I really enjoyed reading the sticky thread of recommended books and was wondering if people would be interested in discussing some of the books more in detail similar to a virtual book club or discussion.

I'll start by asking if any one has read "He Wanted the Moon:The Madness and Medical Genius of Dr. Perry Baird, and His Daughter's Quest to Know Him"
I read this with a local alumnae book club but felt like I had to censor myself a little during the discussion because I didn't want to divulge my own diagnosis and experiences with psych wards.
The book takes place during the "bad old days" of psychiatry in the 40s so treatments were harsh.
It's going to be made into a movie by Brad Pitt.
Thanks for this!

I read half of it (in my case, that's not a reflection of how much I liked it: I read many books at the same time).

I very much like the idea of a (mental health) book club.

What other book would you want to discuss? Anyone else?

I'll add one: "The Skeleton Cupboard: the making of a clinical psychologist" by Tanya Byron. I did read it start to finish.

I would love to belong to a book club. I just fear my ability to keep up with the reading.

That sounds good. A lot of people have read "An Unquiet Mind" so probably might be motivated to post about that. I also just finished "Bell Jar" which was a quick read. We could start with a few and see how it goes. Maybe we should move it to another thread so people outside the Bipolar section can participate. The topic quickly got buried by all the rest of the topics so not sure if we can have temporary sticky's? Would we try having one book a month and then have people post what they think during that month?

I would suggest making two types of thread: one just listing all the books with links to the threads with the discussions of each book.

In the check-in thread, when reading one of the books, you may reference, link to, the "book list/index thread" and each "book discussion thread" could have as it's first post also a link to the index.

I would keep it here in the BP forum. But maybe a link in the check-in thread here to another forum will work (for me). I'd rather not visit more than two forums. And I don't know the people there. There are so many people here. And honestly I prefer a BP (or BPD) common thread. Otherwise it makes it very complicated.

Honestly, I'm also a bit worried.

That's another reason to keep it a BP affair, I'd say. We waste more time than most and we'd understand that we sometimes just can't read (much).

It's already quite complicated.

But we can discuss parts of the books while reading, maybe each chapter or even after a few pages. To make sure we don't spoil it for others we must make sure it's obvious where we're at, so that people may even start reading much later and follow the discussion we had at different stages and just add to the discussion. It might go a bit back and forth, but that's rather easy with a communication medium such as this.

I think I will order "he wanted the Moon" and try it as our first book? I'm not sure it's getting an overwhelming response though.
Thanks for this!

People can join later. Organic growth. Could work. Four people really isn't a bad start.

Any suggestions to add to the list?

When we all have the (first) book I will create a "Bonkers Barmy Crackers Batty Book Club" thread with links to discussion threads. Is that alright/agreed?

Any other suggestions for names?

I probably have to reread parts and have to finish it. I'm not a fast reader. I may start on another book in the meantime, on the list.

I love the name! BBCBBC for short...it's the batty part that's so perfect.

I'm surprised my library hasn't got it yet, I'm first in line. Hope it's not another one they are going to tell me has disappeared. Two history books I wanted to read, disappeared from their shelfs. Makes me mad cause those books are way beyond my price range.

I got "he wanted the moon" on audibles and have listened to 10 minutes and already started sobbing once. This seems like a very good book.

I'd add "Madness" by Marya Hornbacher.

I love the idea of a book club, though like many here I'm worried I wouldn't be able to keep up with it. But I'm willing to give it a shot!

Most of the bipolar books I've read have been first person accounts. This book is interesting as its first person via her fathers manuscript, but also the thoughts and reactions of an outsider trying to peer inside and make some sense of her own life. Very cool premise.

I agree. I'll make two new threads tomorrow. One for this book. I'll quote what you said, to start us off.

BBCBBC is agreed? (just so I know how to name the thread)

It's a can't-keep-up-only book club.

Wait... can it be?

I'm listening to this book on audibles and the voice actor/narration is very good. I hope it's not considered cheating to listen, rather than read.

I don't think its cheating at all. I know I am not part of the club, but I still have "Unquiet Mind" on my Kindle which I haven't really read. She seemed very manic while writing it. It was kinda all over the place for me.

I have "The Power of Now" on audible and I had quite enjoyed that.
