My doctor has me weigh in every month and takes my BMI measurement. I think it is because I'm on an antipsychotic. I haven't gained weight but I believe that is his standard procedure to monitor weight changes. He checks blood pressure, too.

He also won't prescribe Zyprexa due to extreme weight gain side effects, he says.

Which med is causing the weight gain? Maybe you can switch to another med.

After gaining lots of weight on Paxil, I always told my doctor that weight is an issue for me. My doctors have respected this and prescribed me mainly just weight neutral
Drugs. They added topomax at one point to help with weight gain. Tell your doctor about your issue and see what they suggest. Weight gain is terrible. I recently gained 20lbs due to meds. Best of luck.

I agree with Elsa. Can you tell your pdoc about your concerns?

My pdoc has me on weight neutral stuff as well. The only problem is that sometimes the weight neutral stuff doesn't work as well as the weight gain stuff. It's usually a trade off between instability and weight gain, from what I understand.

There are actually some people here who haven't gained weight on things like Seroquel, even though Seroquel is one of the big weight gainers. You could always ask those people here to see what they do, and I'm sure they'll be glad to help. Or maybe they'll chime in here if they see this thread

My pdoc has said the same thing as Bluebicycle -that often the weight neutral stuff doesn't work as well/isn't as 'strong' as the weight gain stuff.

But my PCP's have done blood tests to monitor for high cholesterol and Diabetes.

No pdoc I've had has done anything about weight gain in my case. Though I've read of people being prescribed Metformin for this side effect.

Since my dose of Seroquel has gone up, I've been eating a lot more than usual, I especially get the munchies at night. The only thing I've tried is to stop eating for a while to see if I start to feel full after a time, instead of blindly reaching for food after food (with moderate success, I'm not very good at it).

I'm scared to take Topamax -I took it once for pain and it made me tired and stupid (hence the moniker "Dopamax") though it did lessen my hunger significantly. Though others of course may well not experience the side effects I did.

I took Topamax and it didn't help me. I guess it does for a lot of people, though.

My PCP won't put me on Metformin because while my blood sugar is high my A1C isn't high enough.

My pdoc has put me on as much weight-neutral stuff that she can, but after years of weight gain it may not be enough.

Nothing right now because this is the most stable I've been, probably ever since being diagnosed. Pdoc did say she would look into more weight-neutral alternatives for zyprexa that we could try.
