How do you treat yourself when you're horribly depressed?

I tried going out to lunch today (which I never do), but I still feel awful. I don't even know what to do.

I've been posting here because it's distracting me from the awful thoughts.

I'm just looking to see what you guys do. I need some ideas.

Best I can. My body is the most important part of me. Except for my mind.

I go for long walks, it's really the only thing that helps to lift my mood a bit, even if temporarily. Even if it's around the block, if you don't have a park or something near you. I can't be bothered to go to a gym, so I find this the easiest way to get some exercise and hopefully release some endorphins.

If you go for a walk, and these thoughts still roil around your head, maybe you could listen to music or a podcast while walking?

I hope you feel better soon, I know you've been going through a really hard time for some time now.

i look on amazon at all the latest releases, and plan what items are going to be purchased next! (i could litirally spend a day just looking, making a list as long as my arm of stuff i want to order)

their is always something, and i always remind myself that.. when i think i've seen all the dvds or listened to all the cds, their will be new ones i want- and that helps me

i just ordered a very cool poster- keep calm and love benidorm.

it's going on my wall

Well Blue, first i let it rip, i bawl and cry. Then i take a hot shower, then i go shopping. I buy myself a nice meal, go for a nice ride in the car listening to music. I get home and visit with friends on the phone and internet. And it passes... Mostly i love up and hug my cat Mr. Sassy... Blessing

Couldn't have said it better myself. Cocaine can be added.
They say it complements. Dunno. Never done any. That I know of.

Going for a drive is good. For me it's a trip to the redwoods, my favorite destination. Natural beauty is important. If I can't take the time for a drive, I'll stand on the deck and stare into the forest, not meditation, but it's sort of meditative. A park might offer the same sort of peace if you're in a city.

I went to the mall. Came home and now I'm shaky as all get out. I went to go write something and my hand just started shaking uncontrollably.

I take a bubble bath (sometimes), put on music that I find soothing, search on the internet for things that give me comfort, like inspirational material or sometimes material related to others' experiences to feel less alone. There are times where I want to get my mind completely away from thinking about it though to avoid getting triggered. So I try to watch movies, occasionally spend time talking to someone...forcing myself, sometimes it surprisingly feels good, although I feel like being alone. Also, I try to eat a favorite meal, do brief meditation, maybe light exercise. Mindfulness techniques in therapy can help that you can look up online and reminding myself, "this too shall pass."

Here's a list I wrote last time I was depressed:

Depression Coping

Baby steps- remember to eat!
Change of scenery
Notice beauty everywhere you go
Music with heavy bass
Vigorous exercise
High caffeine intake
Be around people
Listen to favorite songs
Gratitude walks (affirm: it's a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful day! Or count things you love or are grateful for.)

Just some ideas that work for me! Feel better!! How to treat yourselfHow to treat yourselfHow to treat yourself

Love your idea of making a list like this. I may have to give it a try myself.

A bubble bath is about all I can handle. I read too, mostly sci-fi/fantasy, its another world.

For me, eating is vitally important. If I can don't eat enough, I can get very frustrated and weak. It's amazing how much your blood sugar level can do. However, don't make the mistake of staying too long on the couch for too long afterwards.

If I've eaten enough, the next best thing is to just go out and walk or have a coffee somewhere. If I cycle into the city centre, have a coffee and just walk around, I feel much better. Getting out the house is really the key though! Even if have to drag myself doing it.

Caffeine will help a lot too, but be careful not to overdo it or you'll have withdrawal symptoms.

Another thing that I do is writing down how I feel, my thoughts, ruminations, etc. And then try to evaluate them from a more objective perspective - are these thoughts true, are they useful? I close with writing down some very specific things that I will do afterwards (e.g., laundry, washing up, go out for coffee).

I cuddle with my dog, or eat some chocolate, or make that call to the pdoc for a medication adjustment.

Depression is scary horrible.

Any activity that gives me actual or the illusion of social power. Drugs and alcohol often provide this for me. Not recommended for anyone who didn't grow up using these coping mechanisms.
