I haven't smoked in over 30 years, but lately I have reeaally been craving a cigarette. Maybe it's because most of the ladies in my DBT And PTSD groups smoke. The sensation of lighting up and inhaling just feels so seductive, so soothing... It would be absolutely ridiculous to pick this habit up again. It's expensive, I'd smell and taste like an ashtray, and it is bad for my health- not to mention that smokers are regarded as second class citizens today in our society.
I'd probably lose weight if I smoked. I'd more than likely light up a cigarette instead of eating a snack... My husband said he would still love me if I started smoking, but it would shock the s*** out of children if they saw me smoking. Stupid, stupid, stupid! No offense to any smokers reading this thread.

How'd you quit? I'm going to quit after I finish this class, on Tuesday. I'm going to vape and use gum and taper off. Did you quit cold turkey? Any advice on how to quit?

I'm a smoker and no offense taken. All points you make are accurate and valid. Congrats on remaining smoke free. I agree you should not pick up the habit again.... At first you'd enjoy it, then you'd regret it.

Don't pick it back up. It's only as good as the first cigarette, and then it's hell again. I used to smoke and I quit several times. Is there something else you can do when hanging around these people? Chew gum, suck on a candy, etc.? I use a vape now with no nicotine, just to have something to put in my mouth.

I love smoking.

I do it away from people so no one can get offended by my cigarette smoke.

I agree with others though. Don't start. Quitting is hard. And you'll totally become an addict. I found out yesterday that I'm not going to have enough cigarettes to last me four months (I have nine packs right now), and no money to buy more, and I almost had a panic attack.

So I'm being forced to quit.

But don't start. You'll have a whole lot of regret.

I think there may be some weird appeal to cigarette smoke with mental illness. A huge portion of us smoke and I know there is research about why.

But I believe this because as someone who has never even tried a cigarette I once craved them like I'd been smoking for years. It took everything I had to not start smoking. Once I was started on a new AP that went away and never returned. Nobody could explain it but it was such a strong craving like I NEEDED something in that smoke. I guess 2nd hand smoke was enough to trigger it? I will never know.

I'm a smoker too, and please don't start up again. I'm waiting until I lose more weight to quit. Then I'm going on the patch. But like someone else said, at first you'll enjoy it, then you will regret it.

I would chew gum when craving it...

The nicotine fills receptors that help relieve anxiety and block psychotic experiences.

Are you going into an episode? I crave tobacco when going into an episode and hardly ever smoke usually. I also vote for not taking it up again.

I can totally relate! When I go into an episode I want to smoke like a chimney (and I do) but when I am not I do not smoke that much and the habit actually discuss me. Don't start again!!
