I have an app tomorrow and I'm pretty sure she's going to suggest IP. I'm on my mom's insurance so I don't have to pay. But I'm worried I'm going to rack up a huge bill for her. Is there any way I can figure out how much it's going to cost before I go?

No idea, j. Maybe you can call your mom's insurance company?

If you know which hospital you're going to you can probably ask their billing department. Then you have to know what your mom's insurance is going to pay.

Your mom's policy should give you a pretty good idea. You'll have a deductible (you have to meet this before the insurance pays) and/or co-pay (you have to pay this portion of the stay), usually with a maximum out-of-pocket (anything over that amount you don't have to pay anything). So you may have a deductible of say $1500, a co-pay of $200/day and a maximum out of pocket of $2000.
Until you hit $1500 it's all out of pocket. Once you hit that you will pay $200/day until you hit $2000 and then you don't have to pay anything more. Try not to worry about the money; you need to get the help you need. THe money will work itself out. You need to get things under control; that's much more important.

If you are 18 y.o. or older, you can declare yourself responsible for your own bills (in the hospital billing paperwork). If you don't work or work little, only your own income will likely be used to determine whether or not you may obtain additional financial aid through the hospital. This may benefit you. Please discus with patient financial aid and with your mom. Her insurance still comes into play for your main coverage.
(I am well over 18 y.o. and I legally protect my husband and our joint assets by declaring I am the sole party responsible for my own bills. I only list him as my husband and my emergency contact.) I hope you will access any help you may need. Lives matter! ![]() WC |
