After 10 months of being "stable" on Saphris, I found out that it is causing my liver to fail. I am beyond crushed and I now have to find new treatment options. My drs office is slammed with patients so I feel like I'm trying to do this on my own plus deal with a failing liver. I could really use some encouraging thoughts or ideas.
Meds tried: Zyprexa, Depakote, Abilify, Seroquel, Saphris, Risperidone, Geodon, Invega, Currently on: Saphris, Lithium, Seroquel, Guanfacine, Propranolol,

Would you consider using a natural treatment? If so, look into using amino acids and the mineral lithium for the bipolar. You might see if you can get in to see a naturopath who practices orthomolecular medicine where you give the body the nutrients it needs to function. I've been doing this for 9 years with my bipolar 2, and am far more stable than I've ever been. I also feel better as I had so many horrific side-effects that I was almost bedridden from them.
Check out the web site painstresscenter.com. The book Heal with Amino Acids by Billie Sahley is very helpful. You might be able to save your liver by getting off meds, and doing a good detox. Check out The Global Healing Center and Dr. Ed Group as he has some liver cleansing info that might help you.

Have you spoke to your doctor about what they know to be safer for your liver. Pdoc and Doctor need to work together to find a safe drug for you .
All meds are processed differently . I am sorry that a psych med has harmed you to this degree. But it's not a shock, many psych meds help for MI but cause horrible damage to your body .

Have you considered trying an older typical AP like haldol, was offered haldol once by my doc as a shot, but declined as I had to drive home. He told me it was probably one of the best APs out there.

I use the lithium as a base to control full mania and then the Saphris was to control the remaining hypomania and hallucinations. I was told that the only psych med that wasn't processed by the liver is lithium. I had the liver reaction with Zyprexa and Depakote too but was being monitered weekly because of a reaction to St John's Wort and 5-HTP. They pulled me off each of them and my liver normalized after a year or so. I don't know if a true AP will control the mania.....?

I'd suggest Latuda, or the previous suggestion of Haldol might do it as well. Actually I just re-read your post. The symptoms you're describing should be able to be controlled by Haldol. Latuda is an atypical AP, but it's only FDA indication that's relevant to us is for bipolar depression. And it's expensive as hell. Haldol is pennies.
Just to be of support, I know what you're going through with the liver problems. Depakote started to destroy mine.

Quote:
Lithium can ruin your thyroid and kidneys . This why I refuse to take meds daily, I only use meds if I'm in an episode and then only for a couple weeks.

I'm so sorry your ill but truth is, a lot of these meds cause problems like this. I'm glad I'm not on saphris anymore now! I was going to suggest seroquel but I see you've tried it. What problems did you have with that med? I understand your pdoc may be overloaded but they should be able to get you in because I think this is serious. My pdoc is swamped to but if I call with a crises or led problem they always accommodate me even if it means seeing a different pdoc for that visit.
