So it turns out I do have raised prolactin from the Invega (duh - not getting my period since February kind of let me know but blood work has confirmed it). Since I will not go off of Invega, nor will I lower the dose, she is going to put me on bromocriptine to counteract the raised prolactin. Has anyone ever taken this medication? I'm thinking no, but I figured I'd ask. I've researched it because I'm always afraid of the possible psychiatric side effects of medications. It says if you've ever been psychotic you might experience more severe side effects. But that's the point of not going off Invega; the Invega does such a good job of keeping the psychosis and mania at bay that I don't want to take the chance of going off of it. So maybe the Invega will cap any symptoms I might get from the bromocriptine?
I mean I'm going to try it no matter what. If it ****s with me I'll just stop taking it and deal with the raised prolactin. The worst part of the prolactin is my body thinks I'm pregnant, so I've gained about fifty pounds. Part of that is definitely poor diet but not all of it because I eat 1500 calories a day six days a week and have a cheat day on Saturday. I should be able to at least maintain my weight if not slowly lose but I just keep gaining. And I've realized that the weight gain started the first time my period disappeared, last November. Bromocriptine MIGHT help me lose some of the weight. I don't expect I'll ever be back down to my pre-Invega weight but even if I could just lose 20 pounds I'd be happy. But I can't expect that to happen either because I don't want to be disappointed if it doesn't happen. So, has anyone ever heard of it or taken it?

I took bromocriptine due to a raised Prolactin level from risperidal. It didn't do anything to me mentally and had no side effects but it also didn't decrease my prolactin levels like it should have. I ended up going off the risperidal. Hopefully you have better luck with it decreasing your prolactin levels.

Thank you that is encouraging that you had no side effects from it. I'm sorry it didn't work for you though! I honestly don't care about having raised prolactin though. I haven't seen anything saying it's dangerous, just that I can't get pregnant, which is fine my me because I'm not going to have any more children anyway.

I've never taken that med but I do have high prolactin levels. I just deal with it. It sucks and I haven't had a period in over a year. I have gained weight but I didn't know why.

I didn't put two and two together until I looked it up online. It's not a well known side effect of high prolactin but it does happen. I didn't understand why I gained so much weight when my diet hadn't changed. Like I said, i don't eat the best but I never have and I never gained weight like this. I've always been small until I had my son, and even after that I was on the high end of the normal sight range for my height, sometimes slipping into slightly overweight. Now I'm fat. Not morbidly obese but decidedly overweight. It sucks because I keep having to buy new clothes but I'm focused on loving my new body no matter what. But it would be nice to lose some weight so I could fit my clothes better and stop having to buy new ones. Im not made of money.

I took bromocriptine for years for high prolactin due to a pituitary tumor. It didn't hurt me at all, no negative side effects that I can recall, certainly no psychosis. I did not lose any weight but I was also on Tegretol at the time so that might explain it.

I was never on it and never had labs done for prolactin. But because of meds I haven't had a period in over two years. I went to two Gyno's and they checked my other hormones and they were fine. I'm now on birth control just to have a period. Not like I missed it but I just felt it wasn't healthy to go two years and in my 20s without a period. As a matter of fact, now that I'm off risperdal I'm going to ask my pdoc next week for labs again. I thought I was the only one going through this.
