My diagnosis had always been for the last 17 years major depression. So my pdoc sent me to the hospital to get a second opinion.

Well I guess getting a second opinion was a good thing because they have changed my diagnosis to bipolar disorder depression with mixed state. I have been rapid cycling for the past 2 months. The cycles have gotten more rapid since being in the hospital. Yesterday I was low and in bed all morning then last night I was hyper, pacing, agitated, and talking really fast.

They have me on new meds hopefully they will level me out soon so that I can go home.

I had a similar experience, in that I was diagnosed with major depression for twenty+ years and my newish psychiatrist changed my diagnosis to bipolar, mixed.

I'm doing tons better on the mood stabilizer plus antipsychotic. I still don't know that I believe the bipolar diagnosis but the treatment, along with intensive work with my therapist, is working.

Wishing you the best!

I hope the new diagnosis leads to better treatments. Sorry to hear you are rapid cycling, that's the worst.

I feel so weird being in this mixed state. I am tired but revved up at the same time. It is kind of hard to explain. They have a do a scale to rate our mood but since I am both up and down at the same time it is hard to do. I think I will be taking Klonopin again tonight so that I can try to sleep.

We get it. Finally getting the right diagnosis was so helpful in getting on the right meds. Hope things start looking more stable for you. Mixed states are the worst.

Welcome, I too was diagnosed with major depression, but after my hospitalization the pdoc said that I definitely had BP I w/ psychosis, most recent episode at that time was depression. Then again I have had multiple diagnoses from different docs like paranoid schizophrenia, depression, OCD, etc. but BP I is the one I feel most applies to me.

I'm glad you've got the right diagnosis. Being on the right meds can help with stability. I hope you move through the mixed phase soon

I have crashed bad today. Been in bed almost all day. Worried that this will delay my going home even more.
