Does anyone here read for fun and to keep their minds off negative thoughts during depressive/mixed episodes? (Or possibly keep them grounded during mania?)

I truly enjoy reading. I find it very therapeutic for the reasons stated above.

Admittedly, I don't read any BP stuff, but I wouldn't mind reading a fiction book with a BP character. I also wouldn't mind reading a biography/memoir from someone with BP.

Maybe somewhat irrelevant, but... I'm currently reading Fahrenheit 451, and next I want to read To Kill A Mockingbird so that I can read Go Set A Watchman.

One of the ways I made it through last winter's severe depression was by making sure I had one good book after another to read.

I really enjoyed To Kill A Mockingbird, but didn't get through Go Set A Watchman.

Fahrenheit 451 is one of my favorite books by my favorite author. I used to read voraciously, but over the past few years I haven't much until recently. I'm trying to get back into it by reading a few Halloween stories by Bradbury.

I have a friend who is an ufologist. He is nuts about the topic and has been reading and watching videos on the subject for years. So I have starting reading again and started with this topic. I want to see what all the hulaboo is about. Next I will go from science fiction to science itself.

I used to be a voracious reader with a library full of books, from the classics all the way to Stephen King. Unfortunately, I have the attention span of a flashcube now, and can't focus on reading anything longer than a magazine article. It kills my soul because I have ALWAYS loved to read. But there doesn't seem to be a whole lot I can do about it.

I struggle to read (I can barely get through half a chapter in 1 sitting)

it's a bit of ashame, because i'm actually a fan of daniele steel, but takes me so long to read like 10 pages, or even just the introduction (the books I have got through by her took me ages), not because I don't enjoy her writing- I love it, it just takes me forever

their's also so much stuff out their too, and I would like to read more- but as stated above, it's just a problem.

usually what I find myself doing is forgetting about the book, then looking at the last page so I know how it ends, then move on.

the last book I managed to get through was the saddest girl in the world by cathy glass, even that 1 took me over a month.

I love to read when I can focus on it. Neil Gaiman is my favorite author. His book American Gods is my all time favorite book. I re-read it every year around my birthday. I'm a big fan of graphic novels too. I've even got Gaimans Death and Dream from The Sandman tattooed on my legs.

I also love reading mythology, folklore, anthropology, history and fairy tales as well as high fantasy.

Right now I'm reading The Women Who Run with the Wolves. It's a study of the female archetype in fairy tales and folklore.

Yes! Bradbury is a fantastic author. Fahrenheit 451 is the first book of his that I've read. (Just finished it as of today.) I'm looking forward to reading more of his works.

You're the second person to mention Gaiman in the past week. I really ought to read some of his works.

I'll read anything except for romance.

Funny you mentioned graphic novels though... I just got started into reading them. Currently reading Watchmen and plan to read The Walking Dead.

Watchmen is fantastic, one of my favorites. Buy for my money Neil Gaimans The Sandman is probably one of the best graphic novels ever. The storytelling in stellar and the art is incredible. I highly recommend.

I read the Sandman series a long time ago. Great stuff.

I don't read much nowadays because stirring my emotions triggers my anxiety. I can't watch TV or movies unless they're science shows. And sometimes even then they throw in some drama.

I guess I'll check out the Sandman as well. Seems interesting based on what I've read about it.

Now I have a long "to do" list for reading.

He is my absolute favorite. So many different genres in his writing. For Halloween I'm re- reading Something Wicked This Way Comes. I'd like to pick your brain about what you thought of Fahrenheit 451

Reading is great, especially when I can find a good novel series that really draws me in.
Just disappointing when I get on a binge and read everything in a series and either have to find something new or what for the next installment to come out.

I love reading but I can't focus when I'm depressed or hypo, so I usually can't
I love To Kill a Mockingbird, and, although I think I'm in the minority, I also really enjoyed Go Set A Watchman!

I'm the same way, in that I also have a struggle when it comes to reading. Some of it's being able to keep enough focus and some of it's being able to comprehend what it is that I am reading. For example, right now I'm in school and I feel like I have to read these chapters 2-3 times before the content really sinks in. It makes me sad and angry all at the same time.

Like a few other I'm not able to focus either. I stick to simple one or two page stories. I can barely focus enough to read two pages of a newspaper. I use to love downloading books on my iPad and reading them. I love V.C. Andrews, Stephenie Meyers and Iyana Vanzant. Plus a few history books too

Like others have mentioned, I have trouble with concentration too. Instead of reading (which is too much strain on my eyes and causes headaches these days) I listen to audiobooks. Sometimes I have to listen 2-3 times before any of it actually sinks in. Other times I'm on a roll and listen to one book after another. I like all kinds of books but I'm usually drawn to sci-fi and fantasy. I saw Sandman was mentioned....I read that years ago as my dad owned a comic book business so I read many graphic novels and comic books. My favorite comic book is Sky Doll. Beautiful artwork and an interesting and unique story line.

I go through long periods where I cannot read because I cannot comprehend or enjoy anything....then suddenly I will listen to books non-stop again.
Thanks for this!

I love reading. I read a lot of John Jakes and Janet Evanovich. It's kind of hard to read if I'm in severe depression, but the rest of the time I really enjoy it. Lately I have been using books to calm down and distract myself from anxiety.
