I've been in therapy for decades now (I'm 56), & still go to one 1-2 times a month. I think I've learned the bulk of my B.S., I also learned I was bipolar. Since my moods tend to cycle, despite a pdoc's assistance, what's the point of therapy. I'm in a depressive episode, so moved my appointment up a week, to tomorrow. For some reason it helps to have a voice of reason when I'm depressed. I think, however, it might be possible to become too dependent on a therapist. I've been with mine for seven years, so I wonder if this contributes to my questioning things. "Does therapy help with funky moods?" Yes. "Shouldn't you have this shite down pat by now?" Dunno.

I see mine weekly right now. Eventually I will go down to every other week. He prefers I come weekly right now because I had psychosis.

I've been in therapy on and off for 17? years. I think it just helps to have a sounding board with someone that actually knows what they're talking about. I fired my last therapist. Going to start seeing my old therapist again cause she's been the best therapist I've had but she has bipolar too, so she knows my crazy. I've had 10? therapists. Not all are created equal. I think when you click with someone it helps. No shame in being in therapy that long. BP is a lifelong illness and **** comes up and it helps to have someone to talk to about it. I know the board is a good resource but therapists tend to know more, since you know that's what they went to school for. :P My therapist is actually a professor at a college and teaches future therapists, she just does therapy with some people on the side. Usually she just works with people for a while, but we've been working together over 2 years now.

This is why I really like going to a 12 step program. There are no co-pays and I can make my own schedule.
But I do think have a personal therapist is really helpful for most but takes a lot of work. I also could see getting addicted going to 12 step meetings. I love the social part and hearing the other stories, but takes a lot of time to drive and attend them, so I do like 2 a week, but 3 would be optimal. |

I'm in AA, but when I get depressed, I isolate big time. I haven't been to a meeting in almost two months. AA is, however, a big part of my "therapy." When I get semi-agoraphobic it's just hard to get out to a meeting.

I go to therapy once a week, and for now this is the agreement between me, my pdoc, and the therapist. It might not be working for me, but it makes the two docs feel good to ask if I have seen the other one each time I have a visit. If I am off in some way, they will compare notes. With all of this care you would think that I would be in a place that I could leave them both behind!
