One of the things I struggle with is mania kicking in and then I start spending money. I had started getting symptoms a few days ago. Irritable, I started having sex dreams, I started racing thoughts and talking really fast about different things jumping from subject to subject. Yesterday I had to go to the grocery store. I made a list and ate before I went. I only bought what we needed for the house. Today I went back to the same store (Walmart Market) to pick up my meds. I passed by the beauty section. I had a strong impulse to load up my chart with items. My eyes were scanning the shelves and I started thinking what I wanted. I had already bought hair care supples at Sally's and Target. I started self talking to myself. Then I had tears in my eyes. I walked away and left the store. I had to sit in my car and try to calm down. I was so upset because I just can not control this symptom. I do not know what to do. I had just left from seeing my case manager. I told him about me buying a $2,000 purse. Then I went to get my light fixed at my car dealership. I ended up trading my car in for a brand new car. I only had two payments left on my other car and no maintenance problems. Now I have a car payment all over again. My payments are a bit lower though. I just do not know a solution to this??

Can you return the car? When I last bought one, there was a period that I could return it no questions. I've been too impulsive with buying things I really didn't need. I hope you can get a handle on this.

Hi Violetgreen....no they will not let me return it. I thought of that....this happened in July. I went back up there right after. Thank you for reply. I have found sometimes when I really need help maybe one or two people will even give feedback so I don't really post offend

Finances are a big issue for me. Just filed chapter 13 bankruptcy and am having my payments auto deducted from my check. That limits my spending for the next five years!! Without the bankruptcy I'd be much worse off though. I'm sorry your struggling right now but it sounds like you caught yourself today and didn't overspend. I know it's hard!

Hi Coco. I'm sorry you are suffering this symptom. I have it too and it's not easy to deal with, that's for sure. Not only do I shop when manic, but also when in a low mood. Buying stuff makes me feel better.....feel something even if it's only temporary and fleeting. I always feel that once I have this purse, dress, makeup, food storage....I will suddenly be better....and the trickiest part is I actually do feel better momentarily. But in the long run I dig myself into a deeper pit that only brings anxiety and other more serious consequences.

I wish I had suggestions on how to fix this problem....but I do not. But I do understand and relate....you are definately not alone. (((Hugs)))

Congrats on not spending this time...pat yourself on the back for that.
Thanks for this!

When I saw my pdoc yesterday he just agreed it can be a hard thing to deal with. That was all he said. That is a good idea I could have my adult daughter get my cards. Thanks for the idea

I know this is hard. This and spring are bad times of the year for me because I go through my closet and then decide to restock (instead of going without). And I always buy more than I need. Once it starts it's really difficult to stop. I start getting really giddy about shopping. It's like an addiction.

It's good to have someone to hand the cards to. I usually keep mine in a lockbox and my husband has the key.
Thanks for this!

Wow. I would not have your level of self-awareness. You now can control this symptom. I can only remove this symptom through the use of a medication - I would not be able to control the symptom if I continued having it.

You did great! you stopped yourself! This is wonderful.
I hope you see this as a good step.
I have bought cars on a whim too. A little sports car with a terrible blind spot.
They let me give it back to them after I went in and was making a scene about the safety of this vehicle. Fortunately they let me have my traded in car back. I later bought another more sensible car from them, 6 months later.
I was lucky.
