I have noticed of being bipolar and occasional carb. craving exists. Do you share this and if so in which phase you have noticeable craving? I cannot figure me out as I am hardly noticeable and often in mix mode, so it is possible that the craving is not specific to the up or down mood.

I definitely crave carbs when I'm in depressive mode... and gain weight so quickly. When I start having a positive outlook again... I go to a high protein diet and shed the weight in what seems like pounds a day. Carbs are VERY bad for me. But damnit they taste good.
Thanks for this!

I crave carbs when I'm depressed, but the carbs are usually in the form of gummy candies (e.g., sour gummy worms), laffy taffies, mints, and other such candies. I'm not a big chocolate fan, so I usually don't eat it. So I guess you can say I crave all non-chocolate candies

I used to never eat sweets and rarely ate simple carbs because I mostly enjoyed protein and complex carbs. I started craving carbs constantly when put on meds. Now I think I'm addicted to carbs and crave them frequently. I don't know how my cravings correspond to my moods though. Sometimes when depressed or manic I won't eat hardly anything.....other times when in these moods I crave the carbs.

I've found that carbs and eating food in general that is not filling (e.g., sweets) tends to hit me at times when I get into an impulsive phase. It can happen either at a hypo-mania or depressive state.

I crave carbs regardless of state. I think it has to do with the meds.
Thanks for this!

Lots of psych meds turn the average person to become a carb chow hound..

A few months ago I started eating TONS of fruit. It's a healthier way to get sweets....better than what I ate before. I've been eating a ton of watermelon, pears, peaches, grapes, strawberries, blueberries and bananas. My husband had major oral surgery recently so we've had a ton of pudding, ice cream and whipped cream in the house....I can't control myself when it's in the house so I've been eating it more than I should.

I am not on meds, but i crave FOOD all the time.

I do restrict myself and try eat healthy and yadda yadda, but literaly, if I don't watch myself, I eat "once a day" (start in morning, stop just before going to bed).

And not just carbs. It's spicey foods (I sometimes literally just eat spices from the pack how bad it gets), meat, eggs, oily and fried foods.

I don't think I've ever met a carb I didn't like. Strangely enough, I do very well and lose lots of weight on low-carb diets, or at least I did until I decided I wasn't going to diet anymore. And since my husband died I haven't been eating much of anything so I eat whatever I want, and I've lost almost 35 lbs. in three months.

I do not crave them, but to me eating protein and green salad is like work, and when I am stable, I am happy to do the work and do not eat carbs, but when I am depressed, I do not do the work and I eat pizza, polenta, mashed potatoes, etc., because they are comfort foods. I also think that because depression is bleak and colorless for me, I eat bleak polenta and not brightly colored salads - I must be subconsciously selecting foods to match the mood.
