Mixed states constitute a wondrously variegated universe of psychopathology.
- Mixed States in Their Manifold Forms; Psychiatric Times

This morning, after a lousy night's sleep, I could sense that my paralyzing post-mania anxiety was slowly dissolving into plain fresh-out-of-f_cks-to-give depression: equally paralyzing, perhaps, but nowhere near as painful. Then, out of nowhere, in the middle of watching a remarkably bleak Sam Rockwell movie on Amazon video, I resumed work on a story that I hadn't touched in months. A measly 500 words added to a disjointed and skeletal 13,000 word mess, but it made me feel so much better about everything for a little while... better than benzodiazepines, better than Korean Reunification porn, better than high-grade sashimi, better than T'ang dynasty stone sculpture, better than state-licensed dro. I immediately emailed the new text to my editor on the mainland, who will explain to me the many ways in which it makes no sense.

My mom was a feminist poet whose work was disseminated in Muslim countries as propaganda in the eighties by USAID. I still have a newspaper clipping announcing the project, and you can still find her poems translated into Turkish on the internet. Mom, may she rest in peace, definitely visited some Mixed States.

Three cheers for the Mixed States, in all their manifold forms; three cheers for our "wondrously variegated universe of psychopathology", and a shout out to my bipolar brothers and sisters suffering in mania, anxiety, and depression. Back to Sam Rockwell. This was clearly the wrong day to quit benzodiazepines. I've neither left the house since mid-last week nor showered since Sunday and I look and smell like the Unabomber.

Next mood swing in 20 minutes.

I'm Lefty the Salesman.

I'm sure that a shower would help everyone around me feel better.

That too. Cleanliness helps to elevate one's mood tremendously while simultaneously making those around one feel much more comfortable and pleased.

I'm sold on the shower, but I'm supervising alone a sightless and potentially highly volatile and aggressive miniature dachshund capable of terrorizing the entire neighborhood during the duration of the briefest shower; I have to cut back my Unabomber beard with electric clippers before properly shaving with a blade, so I might as well save money on a proper haircut and buzz my whole head with the clippers, resulting in a wild-eyed skinhead look that always relaxes neighbors, clients and passers-by. I am duty-bound to postpone my personal hygeine until reinforcements arrive; If I try to bring the blind dog into the shower with me, bad things will happen.

Wouldn't they be BooCheers and CheerBoos? Or cBhOeOeOrS?
(I'm more in the BooHiss No-No-No camp myself..)

Kudos on finding humor in mixed. That's no easy task. But they pretty well walked right into it in not knowing their glowing prose on the subject was humorous in its "Wow, really?!" kind of way, didn't they? "Wonderously variegated universe of psychopathology". Lol. That's one way to put it(!) And to think I had never put it quite like that in all these years...

I'm glad you were feeling better, Lefty, even if it didn't last too long. Sometimes every little bit counts.
