I just went to the new Dr. I've been waiting to see. Turns out an episode that I didn't realize was an episode, about 12 years ago, qualifies me as Bi Polar I. He did say that I was Mixed Bi Polar at the end of the session when I was leaving. Is this a different diagnosis or a sub under Bi Polar I????

Mixed episodes are defined by symptoms of mania and depression that occur at the same time or in rapid sequence without recovery in between.
Thanks for this!

It sounds to me like you are having a mixed episode which is still under the diagnosis of bipolar one but it's still possible to be diagnosed as mixed bipolar.

I'm not sure but I believe "mixed" is your mood state. You can be depressed, stable, hypomanic, manic or mixed. BP1 is your diagnosis.

Thanks guys. After researching it a little I see that it's considered a classification, they used a specific word for it but that was basically what it was. Like a sub title. I'm so confused now. I've been reading too much I think!

Interestingly enough, you unwittingly came very close to saying it! It's called a "specifier".

They started using this term in the DSM 5. And you're right, it's an add-on/subtitle to an already existing dx, that specifies symptomatic stuff that is happening during a current episode.

Hope that helps.

That's it! Thanks for helping me out. Don't know that I'll be able to remember that word but I'll try....
