Actually for almost (or all) jobs in America you work "at will". They can fire you for anything they want. In reality of course you can sue for wrongful termination. You may have the ADA on your side unless the company can prove your absence substantially hurts their business.
Thanks for this!

My boss at least seemed happy to see me back. It was just rough in the sense that everyone seemed to be asking me the same questions, and of course I really didn't feel like telling them I was admitted to the hospital because I was having thoughts of suicide.

I'm almost afraid to tell my PCP about this, but at the same time, I feel she has a right to know.

It seems like a foreign concept to them. PDocs have heard it all but my poor primary just was taken aback. She HAS known me for almost 20 years. .

I talked to a friend of mine who happens to have the same PCP and actually works in the same office as her. She suggested that I at least send her an e-mail, so I did. I figure it can't hurt anything, especially since I only really see her once or twice a year, unless I'm really sick or something else is going on.

Most GPs have seen it all. It's probably for the better that you emailed her, simply so she can help do the right blood work, etc.

Regarding your return to work, I'm sorry it was rough. Of course there are nosy busybodies everywhere, but most rational people will stop with a, "I was in the hospital and I'm getting better" response. If you leave it there and don't offer more information, it's probably for the best. Most people don't have intimate experience with psych issues, and in a professional environment it's possible for it to come back and bite you in the rear.
