My dad Said neither he nor me were bipolar, because we felt a psychological need for hypomania when depressed. I disagree. I think that is mainly the way it goes with bipolar. When depressed you wish for hypomania and then hypomania drains your reserves and you slip back to depression. My t suggests i am bipolar. I would like to know to be able to treat it better.
Do you ever feel some kind of psychological need for high phases? Does something trigger your hypomania or can you stimulate it? |

Personally, I think I do my best when I'm hypo-manic/manic. I think that's what actually gets me through tax season most of the time. And that's when I get a lot of things done or halfway before I lose interest. However, my wife would highly disagree that I'm at my best when I'm higher up on the mood scale.
When it comes to triggers... I'm not a very good judge of triggers (other than tax season). My t always asks what I think triggered my mood swing and I'm not very good at pinpointing a certain event(s).

I don't think that hypo-mania is a psychological need I think it is an over correction in the brain.

Having hypomania and then depression is pretty much a textbook definition if bipolar. I seriously doubt it's a psychological need. For your sake listen to professionals and not that your dad who is obviously in denial.

THANK YOU! He said my grandfather was also like that. I think he is in denial. I see triggers insofar as my hypomania turned to mixed for a week when something bad happened but now I am back totally hypomanic.

I am trying so hard to get meds.... until now they just gave me promethazine. They (my p and t) want to wait until they have a ****ing diagnosis, but to me it is clear already. I am very high functioning, but I am going completely crazy at the same time. I think because they are irritated by high functionality they haven't prescribed anything yet. I try to convince them but they are stubborn up to the point of irresponsibility.

Maybe it's time to find a new psychiatrist. It shouldn't take all that long to diagnose you if you are bipolar.
