I don't think I have ever talked about this here, but I'm very certain my dad has BP. I see much the same symptoms in him that I have experienced myself, though we deal with them differently - meaning, he is in complete and utter denial about it and I try to deal with it, well like a lot of you.

This evening I came upon my dad digging through the trash. he said he was looking for a key. When I asked him what the key was for, he said he would know when he found it. When my mom got home, he became somewhat verbally abusive to her, accusing her of having men over without his knowledge who were smoking crack, etc.

Basically, he's been manicky all week and now it appears he has crossed over into psychosis - worse than I've ever seen, and I've lived with him most of my life.

I have asked him a couple of times in the past to go see a doctor. He refuses claiming the only problem he has is "you people," meaning my mom, brother and myself.

I would personally take him to the ER, but he wouldn't likely get into the car.

Are there any non-suicide crisis hotlines out there I might try? All I can find are for suicide. Or.. should I call the police to 51/50 him? I'm hesitant to do that because he's not being physically violent, thus not technically a "threat to himself or others" (physically) but I don't know how else to get him to the hospital.

I... I just don't know what to do. My Dad

Any advise would be GREATLY appreciate.

Also does California have a 211 or 311? Those numbers is sorta like information but gives you access to a whole wide and variety of different programs and services, maybe you can luckout and find something for your situation.

Do a search for "mental health hotline". A number of different options came up. You can choose what fits best. I don't know what else to recommend. Sending you all the best.

If he's not a threat to himself or others, you'll not be able to slap a 5150 on him. One time While living in CA I was psychotic and my wife tried that. I was sitting on the patio chatting with the police officers. They determined I wasn't a threat, and they left.

Eventually that episode landed me IP, but it wasn't due to a 5150.

Thanks everyone.

Yeah that whole 5150 thing occurred to me after I posted.

He's calmed down a bit, but he's still teetering between awareness and psychosis. We had a talk. He admitted to "hearing people talk" which is fueling his delusions.

I told him he needs to see a doctor, he insisted he doesn't. He claims his god will help him - yes, the same god who is allowing all this to happen is apparently going to make it stop. 😒

I got his insurance and GP info from my mom. I'm going to call on Tuesday, as I assume they'll be closed for the holiday tomorrow, to see about getting him a referral to see a pdoc. I don't know if they will help me or not, given it's me not him calling, but if they won't, I'll have my mom call.

I mean, I'm really not the kind who believes in the whole "forced" (I guess) treatment, but I am at my wits end and I refuse to let him treat my mother like crap any longer.

I don't know.

Thanks again for the advice and words of encouragement.

I have no idea what you can do but it must be so stressful for you and your family. Are you ok? I hope this episode passes soon for him and everyone else sake.
