Just a fun thread.

If you've ever gone to therapy, how long have you gone? What about therapy has helped you the most?

I've been going to therapy for about 1.5 years, as I only sought help 1.5 years ago. Therapy has really helped me pick up coping skills and taught me to rely less on meds and more on myself, which is a HUGE thing for me.

I've been going off and on for over twenty years now. I picked up a lot of coping skills. I've now learned where some of my negative self-talk comes from, so I'm dealing with it.

I used to try therapists. Longest I ever had one was about nine months. I fire them because all they end up saying is I shouldn't be so hard on myself. Every time. If someone actually offered a "how" to do that, I probably wouldn't fire them.

Don't mind me, I'm just cynical when it comes to therapists.

Over the last twenty years I have seen many, many therapists of all types and most were useless and some harmful. My current T however, who I have been seeing weekly for six years, is amazing. He is very skilled and knowledgeable, caring, non-judgemental, generous with his time, remembers almost everything I say, morphs with the situation (as in uses many types of therapy depending on where I am at) and listens well. He has saved my life several times. I am so thankful I found him.

I've been seeing someone since October, though I stopped going for two months and then went back.

He's helped me with figuring out how to manage symptoms, helped me with coping mechanisms, helped me stop some of my negative self-talk, has helped me realize that my origins of PTSD aren't my fault (that one's still an on-going battle) and has helped me to realize I'm not broken. Any T before him either didn't help as much as I needed them to, or they actually made me feel worse. I think I found the best T I could've for my situation. I like his no BS attitude and his straight up nature. I need a T who's a bit more of a hard ***, but one that I can still feel comfortable about confessing anything to. I got lucky also because he's not a T who will shove me into IP unless it's my choice. It makes me more comfortable to tell him my symptoms because I'm not scared I'll be locked up for it.

Working on now: Getting stabilized, trauma therapy and CBT.

I was an oblivious clueless neophyte who stumbled into a psychologists office looking for a clue as to why my husband thought it was ok to beat me, and incidentally why I was so anxious all the time. That was over 30 yrs ago. I found support, acceptance, acknowledgement and a ton of coping skills. I've not gone consistently but when I did I had good luck with the Ts that fate sent my way. Therapy along with some long term outpatient IOP changed my life.
