Hey guys, I've been taking lithium since september, and it's the first medication I've ever been on or tried. I definitely felt more stable on it, but the side effects were too much for me and beginning to interfere with even my job. I've decided to taper off of the lithium. My pdoc suggested still being on a mood stabilizer, but I really want to try my hand at being med-free. Before going on meds I didn't even know that I was bipolar, until my therapist told me I had a previous diagnosis and she agreed with it. I'm thinking that maybe if I'm more self-aware and careful I'll be fine, but it's still scary to me. I have another two weeks before I'm off the lithium entirely, and I've already had brief hypo and depressed states.
I'm especially scared because I just entered a new relationship, and he's never seen me like this.

Do you guys have any tips or advice for me? I want to handle this the best I can. Worst case I can always get on meds again though...

If you're already having symptoms, I'd strongly recommend you go with your pdoc's advice of finding a new mood stabilizer to take the place of the lithium. Good luck as you go forward with this.

Vertigo has given VERY wise advice.
I agree with him.
Please take good care of yourself.

the catch 22 here especially with lithium (there has even been studies done) is that you WILL get symptoms or possibly an episode just because you are going off not necessarily because the mood disorder is raging.

it's a big choice to go without meds. how have you done in the past? how long have you been stable?
you are working closely with your pdoc so that's a good thing! do you have other coping skills?
if you decide now or in the future you need to go back on meds there is nothing wrong with that!

Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

There are many many other meds that you can try that might not have side effects at all for you.

How are your coping skills ? If you go off I hope you have a huge toolbox of coping skills and prepare for a possible crash

Stay safe and mentally healthy.

I was already "high functioning" before medication, although I was miserable, self-harming, drinking a lot and vaguely suicidal. I still was able to work 2 jobs and pay the bills, and never severely damaged relationships with people I loved. I was just... miserable. I do have coping skills, and I've taken steps to prepare for a possible breakdown. This is nothing really, but I'm recognizing the symptoms and it scares me

Now, my coping skills are good. I do a lot of mindfulness, exercise, have a good support group, ect. I'm taking a lot of steps to prepare for a crash as well. Just never know what's gonna happen I guess. A big part of it is that I'm only 19, and I hate the idea of needing medication long-term. I just want to see if there's a better way...
Thanks for this!
