Chris Cornell, the powerful, dynamic singer whose band Soundgarden was one of the architects of grunge music, died on Wednesday night in Detroit hours after the band had performed there. He was 52.

The death was a suicide by hanging, the Wayne County medical examiner’s office said in a statement released on Thursday afternoon. It said a full autopsy had not yet been completed.

Mr. Cornell’s representative, Brian Bumbery, said in a statement that the death was “sudden and unexpected.”

Soundgarden played at the Fox Theater in Detroit on Wednesday night, and had been scheduled to perform in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday at the Rock on the Range festival.

My fav song was -Black Hole Sun. I listen to it offered

I mentioned this in another thread but yeah it's heartbreaking. suicide always effects me so deeply and in a confusing way. I know what it's like to feel that way and I think that it scares me when people go through with it.
I also wish there was some way they could have REALLY been helped.
so sad. he was great

It is very sad. When I go to my doctor's they all say I don't present with severe depression (face, behavior, ect). I look and act normal. It saddens me that he might have been wearing a facade while he was in such pain inside.

I hope your pdoc fully understands the depth of your depression now.
I've had the same problem; it's taken years for me to get it across to my pdoc and he listens well. I was, somehow, still sounding okay.

My dad took a very different approach. He had blatantly threatened suicide for years. We were told the people who threaten a lot never do it. WRONG ANSWER. He did it when everyone had least expected it. He even told people and they were so tired of hearing it, they just let it go. I had spent hours begging adults to respond that time; yet, they were convinced he was bluffing. I was 60 miles from him and could not get to him. He wasn't bluffing. This had a devastating effect upon the entire family: his mother, wife, children, etc.

This is a loaded topic. Lots to discuss. I'll stop here for now.

His music was/is a huge part of daily process to get through the day. I too know well of putting on a "normal face", and "you look like your doing well" comments. His death has taken a toll on my recent progress but we have his music to move on with and to keep fighting the good fight. It's very unfortunate how little people with mental illness are taken seriously until something like this happens.

I was a big fan back in the 90's and went to a few concerts which I cherish. I've been listening to several of his songs recently and admiring his talent. This is truly sad and tragic....I just wish him peace and his family sanity at this time.

WC, I'm deeply sorry to hear about your father and completely sickened that professionals ignored him, believing that those who threaten aren't likely. Actually, telling someone you plan it is the #1 warning sign and people are often ignored. This must have been so difficult for you to watch go down. My heart breaks for you. (((Hugs)))

Thank you, Elsa. It was devastating for many years. I was 12y.o., away on a school vacation. He'd called. He'd called several people. I could not get anyone to listen to him, since they were told to ignore him. I was frantically trying to figure out ways to get to him, to no avail.

remember that song he did with Eddie Vedder from pearl jam "hunger strike"? good tune...

Well I don't mind stealing bread
From the mouths of decadence
But I can't feed on the powerless
When my cup's already overfilled

Yeah
But it's on the table
The fire's cooking
And they're farming babies
The slaves are all working

Blood is on the table
The mouths are all choking
But I'm goin' hungry
Yeah

Yes, when they were together the Band was called Temple Of The Dogs and I still have the CASSETTE tape of that album. Eddie Vedder has the best voice in all of music to my ears.
