Does this med cause you to be drowsy? I did not think so until I was placed on 8 mg.

(Sorry for the mispelling Risperidol I think)

I did not get drowsy on 8mg but I was very manic when I was taking it so I wasn't capable of feeling tired at that time. Aside from being drowsy, how is it working? Did you take it to bring you down off mania? If so, perhaps it's doing its job now? Let your doc know if the drowsiness bothers you and they can help you decide if a reduction is needed or another med to help fight fatigue. Good luck.

I used to take 0.25-1mg. It was mildly sedating, but not bad. I can't speak for the high dose you're on, though.

I'm on 6mg and it does make me a little tired. So instead of taking it in the morning I take it at night. Who cares if I'm tired then, right?

I was taking 3mg for about a year. Worked great until my feet swelled. I had to go off it.

Risperidol did help me with the mania. In the past I was on it for two years. I like it because it has an antidepressant property. I later changed to another AP. Can the drowsey feeling come much later after beginning or increasing an AP like this? Its of no further use to me when it makes me drowsy. So I lowered the dose.

I ended up with a DUI. I was not drinking. I have Loranzepam but did not take it for it made me too drowsy. I take Buproprion and Buspar. Buproprion is not sedating. I have been on the same dosage with Buspar for years. I had a history with Risperidol at 6 mg with no problems. It was then increased to 8 mg. So I am trying to figure out what happened.

hi. risperidone is one of the first atypicals marketed after clozapine. thing is...its really only atypical-ish. my former psychiatrist said that after about 6mgs, it has a bad adverse effect profile. 8mgs of risperidone is enough to cause prolactin elevation, sedation, cognitive impairment, and eps (in a lot of people).

the most ive ever taken is 4mgs, and that was combined with depakote for a severe episode that resulted in less than voluntary hospitalization. it was...OK. I simmered down quickly with the combination. I had some uneasiness and eps, so my outpatient psychiatrist switched me over to Abilify.

--if-- the psychiatrist keeps the dosage in check, risperidone can be a viable long term treatment option. i think any time you take risperidone, there's the potential for prolactin elevation. eps and sedation become more of an issue at higher doses. tardive dyskinesia is an issue with --any-- tranquilizer/antipsychotic, but i have read that it seems to be more common w/ long term risperidone treatment than with some other 'atypical' tranquilizers.

not to scare you, but some psychiatrists pretty much like to shut people up. ramping up the dose of a tranquilizer just...because...would concern me, personally. the tranquilizers can be helpful to a lot of people, but they're also used to shut people up and make people more docile and compliant, so...personally, id see about a different psychiatrist, if that's an option for you.

still_crazy, a good post. Thank you and others who have replied. I am thinking of getting a different pdoc, but others at this same clinic have much less experience.. There was no warning from my doctor. The bottle which I could not read initally ended up saying possible drowsiness. But a good med site stated it was very rare. I also never had trouble over a long period of time at 6 mg.
