The most common usage of RPG is "rocket propelled grenade," which is what they're using in Afghanistan & elsewhere these days. Be careful if one shows up at your door.

I did try one in the early years of email/fidonet; but the latency always seemed to kill the game play to me. There was a forum based one for a while that was pretty good, but could still get "hung up" if players didn't respond regularly.

I just play warcraft now, RP when I want, just do mechanics when I don't. I did carry over one thing that I liked. In DnD you had to account for your chars subsidence; so in warcraft I earn enough gold each month to buy a month of game play with gold. Makes it more tangible, though not a good $/hour/play time choice economically.

I've never heard of an email version of RPG. But it sounds interesting.

I do RPGs through yahoo group and google docs. Though from time to time I do a solo email one with a buddy where we go back and forwards through email.

Role Playing Games. I've only ever played around a table. We met every week using the Warhammer rules, but played an historical narrative. Our characters were individuals in King Henry V's entourage on the Agincourt campaign.

I recently tried to run a game for my sons using the Pathfinder rules, but it proved too difficult to manage with ECT messing with my memory of what had happened and what I planned to do.

In general, no matter what rules you're using, it's a structured way to socialise. It makes interaction easier as you're playing a character according to a template, yet tweaked with personal flair.
