World Bipolar Day is 30 March, though I think that's principally in the US.

I try to make every day "Compassion Day."
I know so many do the same. It's noticed and appreciated.

Shattered Sanity, Are there any special events happening for Bipolar Awareness Day? One you might attend?

I hope there are programs about the truth concerning bipolar. So many TV shows and the news get it wrong--like we're all ax murderers.

This is a FB post I wrote on July 1st:
Quote:
What sucks with these awareness months and days is the drop back into obscurity. For many people and much of the media, Nov 1 was forget AIDS day, March 1 - forget Black History Day, April 1 - forget Gender Equality and Self Harm, May 1 - forget Autism, June 1 - forget Mental Health and today (July 1st) is forget Pride Day. Increased awareness for a month isn't enough. We have to be advocates all the time, particularly for those that the current administration would marginalize.

Thanks, Laurie!
That explains the front page of the newspaper today. There's a huge article on the major and tragic shortcomings re: emergency psychiatric care in this state. It's horrific!

*Mental Illness Awareness Week coincides with similar organization campaigns in early October such as World Mental Health Day[7] (World Federation for Mental Health), National Depression Screening Day[8] (Screening for Mental Health), and National Day Without Stigma[9].
What we all need: NATIONAL DAY WITHOUT STIGMA!

Yes. It's horrific in the whole nation. I serve on my local mental health board and emergency psychiatric care in our county is a big topic we work on.

The problem here is multifaceted. the insurance companies refuse to pay for IP or PHP or even IOP so people are deteriorating to where cops need to be called in for forced IP but there are o beds. There was just a write up on this in the paper people in this area are being taken 100's of miles away to find an open bed. They don't even see a pdoc face to face it's done over a chat feature cause there aren't enough Pdocs in the area. Then they are put in cop cars and transported out of the area then there's no follow up available after the 72 hour hold is up.

It's so unsettling, knowing the treatment of people with MI is so far behind the times. How does this happen to such a vulnerable population?

People needing psych care are being held in ERs for days/weeks. Some are sent to jail. Jail? They are further mistreated in jail. and

It's sad, infuriating and tragic!

The state of mental health care...or rather the lack there of is shameful in our country. (USA) so many people in my family have been jail when they should have been in the hospital. My baby brother has been in jail so many times that the only thing we can say any more is "at least he's off the streets" and not living under under a bridge somewhere
