So I recently found out about these places called clubhouses in the community geared towards people with mental illnesses. I took a tour and was going to become a member but just curious if anyone else had experiences with them and if they helped at all with employment or life in general...

I've been sort of trying to get the courage to try the local one for about 2 years.......I know in the city where I went to school they had them and were well thought of.

They have a catering unit so you can get a cheap meal and get trained in food services--it does catering for events as well so you can apply for job there once you get trained. They also have workshops for job training and agreements with some employers to set you up with transitional job. They have computers to use and social events like game night. Seems like a good place to socialize and get some structure if necessary.

I don't want to sound arrogant, but many of the clients were fairly low-functioning, which made me feel bad about myself. I already feel like a failure because I'm on SSDI. I had a successful career for 25 years before hitting the wall. In retrospect, it was a matter of my attitude that led me to stop going, rather than the people at the clubhouse. The clients were kind and understanding.

The one here (I live in a fairly small town in a very rural area) just does social stuff. Games, crafts, that kind of thing. It's only open 3-4 days per week and for only 4 hours.

Part of why I haven't gone is that I don't know how well I'd fit in. It can be hard to not turn into my OT self in that kind of situation and I definitely don't need to be trying to help everyone instead of helping myself, but it is an automatic switch sometimes.

But maybe someday.

So I ended up trying two different clubhouses and ended up choosing the one closest to home which only had a 1 day orientation instead of 3 days. I go maybe once every other week. It was a little disappointing since the only jobs they help you find are either in food services or retail but at least I can use their computers and get a free meal on Fridays.

I had a great time at a clubhouse one Summer years ago, when they were less employment oriented. I was the afternoon receptionist five days a week. We only got about five or ten calls all afternoon tho. I got on well with a former heroin addict there on voc rehab and we would talk about movies all afternoon. I had a swell time!

I moved away from that city and other clubhouses didn't work out. I attended a mental health drop-in for many years. You have to try a lot of things to find one that works out. Sometimes finding someone you click with at a place makes all the difference. I have fond memories of my time at the clubhouse and drop-ins.

How do you find these clubhouses? I've never heard of these. What do I google?

We do have NAMI and DBSA near my area, but almost all of the groups and social events are either at night or the weekends. That's great and necessary for those with disabilities that work, but it would be nice to have a place to go during the work week, too. I have such a difficulty getting out of the house. I isolate. I wish there was something that could help motivate me to be around people where I don't feel compelled to spend money. Plus, those things that require money are usually not places you make friends.

That clubhouse list is not all inclusive. There are more out there. I just looked it up on Google for where I live and found one. This clubhouse is not listed there. But I imagine that list is a place to start.

There are other programs that aren't called clubhouses. Ours used to be. I lead our program.
