My soon to be 12 year old daughter is on a IEP. She qualifies because she has ADHD. Oct 17th 2017 I told her school IEP coordinator that I would like to have a IEP meeting and make a change to my daughter’s IEP. She looked me directly in my face and told me. I would not be able to have a IEP meeting that changes keep only be made once per year. I had just moved from Tennessee to Oklahoma so I was not sure if the laws were different. My daughter’s 6th grade year was terrible. Last Friday something just told me to call the state board of education. I spoke with someone at the board and I asked for the e-mailed for the person that is over IEPs. I sent an e-mail to the state IEP coordinator. She replied back and hour later. Her reply said, anyone on an IEP can request to make changes to their IEP at anytime. In my e-mail I did indicate that I would like to file a formal complaint against the IEP coordinator at my daughter’s school. The state IEP coordinator attached the complaint form in her e-mail. I completed it and sent it back it her.

This morning at 9:30 AM CST I have a meeting with the school principal, the school IEP coordinator and my daughter’s advocate. I’ll post and let you all know how it went. I just need to keep my emotions in check.

What a great mom to advocate for your child in that way.

Everyone will know because of the complaint filed what has happened, so I would recommend that you avoid any sort of accusatory tone, though don't be afraid to retell the story of what happened if it's going to help.

My thoughts as a former teacher will be with you. Even more so, my thoughts as a parent will be with you, too.

Hello everyone,

The meeting went well. The principal was willing to schedule a IEP meeting to have things in place for next year. I told her I had contacted NAMI and found a organization that helps parents and guardians with IEPs. My daughter will be going to a new school next year in a new district. I will make an appt with the IEP mediators then my daughter’s school IEP coordinator and schedule a meeting. Thank you for all the support

I'm glad your meeting went well! The school should have honored your request a long time. I'm a school psychologist so I'm aware you have every right to request an IEP meeting at any time. Great job advocating for your child.
