I tapered off ativan using valium. It was hard to say the least, and depressing. I still have some depression and anxiety, but i feel clear minded. I've been studying biology, microbiology and chemistry as I want to go back to school at the age of 25 for biochemistry. I'd like to work for a pharmaceutical company, which isn't too hard if you have a bachelors in biochemistry. Even with anxiety and depression, reading a biology textbook, everything clicks and makes sense now without the ativan. I have a horrible problem with social anxiety and I live in Wisconsin so I am going to start the fall off doing University of Wisconsin online and then transfer in. I'm hoping when the benzo stuff levels out and the prozac kicks in, social anxiety will be better. Please wish me the best of luck. I haven't been back to school since age 20.

Congratulations on your success. I have a B.S. in Microbiology and an M.S. in Cell & Molecular Biology. But I think the meds have messed up my mind now; it is hard to make those concepts click or believe I once wrote a first author publication for a scientific journal. However, I was mis-diagnosed with major depressive disorder and given antidepressants, which tend to send me into a manic state.

You CAN do it though. I actually graduated with my B.S. while going through most of college with anorexia (noticeable) and severe overexercise and the bipolar (treated as depression). I was very depressed and on meds in the end, and things clicked fine; even getting my Master's, things clicked for me. I think it was too many years on the wrong meds, and I didn't have medical insurance, so I had to use a free county treatment center that had me on 12 psych medications at once, I kid you not. THAT is what I think really messed me up.

Prozac has been my magic bullet so far. No other antidepressant has worked. It was my first try 2 weeks ago and I've seen progress. But benzos sure cloud my mind. I remember on ativan I could read 3 chapters of a novel and not remember a thing I read. How am I supposed to finish school like that? lol.
