I've been sick with a sinus infection and bacterial bronchitis for almost a week. Doctor prescribed Cipro and Phenergan/Codeine cough syrup. A few short days after, I started to notice my mood had changed from the "normal" depressive state to mania. And, I mean a STRONG mania. To the point, I want to go and have a spending spree. After thinking about it, I narrowed down to the cough syrup as the culprit. I've since discontinued it, but the hypomania is here to stay. Sent a message to my doctor through the hospital portal and am hoping to get some direction in a few hours.

Just here to sound off on what is happened and to get some feedback.

I had a reaction to Phenergan ~30 years ago (but I don't think it was mania). Nothing would surprise me, though. Hope you get help quickly.

Come to think of it, my vet once recommended Phenergan to calm my dog when traveling, and I declined because of my fear of phenothiazines.

Hope your doctor is able to help.

I use to take Gabapentin for a nerve pain before I was dx. Looking back it always threw me into a manic phase even though I know some bp patients take it for the opposite issue.

Going up on my Seroquel, first. If that does nothing, I'm to up my Abilify. Will post again in the morning with results.

Non-BP people like to abuse codeine to get high. They mix it with other ingredients to create "purple drank," I think it's called. Lil Wayne is one person who drinks/drank it, and that was all over the news years back because he was hospitalized for it. I forget what it did to him, but I think that's irrelevant.

ANYWAY, I wouldn't be surprised if codeine made you manic if it can make the average person get high under certain circumstances.

Hope you get better soon!

Thank you for your message! I'm coming down now. Took an increase in my Seroquel to kick it in the pants. I do not understand why anyone would want to drink this stuff. It is horrible! Makes me feel like garbage. When I had my wisdom teeth removed, they gave me a cocktail which included sodium pentothal. It left me with hysterical crying fits. It took a high dose of ativan and several hours of rest to recover. Another drug I hope never to encounter again.

I love cough syrup I took it again a few weeks ago, after years not taking it (due to afraid that it’d interact with my psych meds), for my very bad cough. What a relief as usually I don’t take anything when I have coughs. It did make me hypomanic though.
