In August 10 2018, The King lives again. RCA has released a Gospel album with 14 songs, including Amazing Grace.

I was born ten years too late to dance to his music. But I listened. And learned.
My first words in English, were from his records.

I have a VCR tape from the Ed Sullivan show, where Elvis "The Pelvis", was only filmed from the waist up. The way he moved when dancing, was forbidden in TV at the time. 1956 to be exact.

I went to Vegas in '71 just to watch the man in his element.
He was the resident star of the International Hotel, later bought by Hilton.

To my naive surprise, the shows (several a day) were booked three months in advance. A little inconvenience.
However, I'm the guy who went to NY with no hotel reservation in the middle of an IBM convention. And found a dump in the West Side. But that's another dollar.

I flew from San Juan eleven hours and four stops just to see him. And to attend an electronics show that was my biz at the time.
My only solution was to use the grease that loosens all bolts.

I shook hands with the doorman with a Franklin in my right.
He peeked at godspeed, smiled, and pointed to a corner with barely standing room. Let alone any service. But I was in.
This is a time when you could buy a 3/2 one car garage for 10 grands.
Taxis in The Strip were 3 dollars no matter how far you were going.
A suite at Caesar's set me back 32 bucks a night. A fortune.
I was already drowning in plastic called Mastercharge and Bankamericard.

First night I'm losing 50 dollars and I'm almost crying. Second night I'm losing 300, drunk and happy, with no intentions of ever leaving Vegas.

My wife at the time, just had my beautiful baby girl and I was needed. So back I went to face the music. And do my best to pay the plastic.
I've returned several times, but never like when Elvis was alive.
Not even Wayne Newton could fill his gap.

La Bruja is a person used to take vacations. Two or three times a year. Me, I just tag alone. I could live my whole life in my habitual surroundings.
We have been to most States. Because of her.

She can tolerate Elvis so I suggested The Elvis Tour.
We spent a whole day at Graceland. Coincidentally, it was during Elvis week.
There were more than seven hundred floral arraigments(sp) from more than fifty different countries. Fifty years later.
I mean, the man is really loved all around the world.

We also went to Tupelo Miss. To visit the shack where he was born. Unreal how a person can turn his world around in a matter of a few years.
La Bruja swears he's in Tupelo. Not Graceland. She felt his presence, and had a few words with him there. I'm not much of a believer, but in my Bruja I trust.

All in all, I'm downloading the album to my iTunes and paying my 9.99 (with plastic, of course) and tomorrow, him and I are gonna have a duet. Him leading, of course.

Cheers.

What a great narrative. Thank you.

I didn't know you were from PR. My suegros lejanos live up in the mountains just over the hill from Arecibo.

Like you, I'm learning my second language through music (and having lived in Spain a couple of years). I listen to Maná, Revolver, Shakira, y otros. Pero por ser escocés yo también escucho la gaita.

I like him too.

not so much the gospil stuff (it's not really my thing), but more your jailhouse rock, wonder of you, teddybear, suspicious minds, etc etc

I think my favorite elvis song is moody blue. it's really underplayed and underrated

but I also like don't cry daddy

Thank you Vertigo. I always really appreciate your comments.

I'm Cuban. However, we are the modern Jews. All spreaded around the world.
I was living in PR at the time. Had two children there with a Cuban wife.
Had a biz selling electronics to the American factories established in PR.
Hence the Vegas trip. But I couldn't care less about the convention. I went for Elvis.

It's nice chatting with you. Cheers.

If you haven't heard the live version of "Unchained Melody", check it out on Youtube. Elvis could barely function yet delivered an incredible performance.

I once lost $800 in ten minutes playing blackjack at Turning Stone Casino. I blame it less on my card playing prowess and more on my belief that I was exceptionally manic at the time.
Thanks for this!

can I ask a question:

is the reason you " hate" elvis", something to do with elvis himself, or just because of the type of music.

using another example (not elvis)

I don't like prince. it's not the style of music (I like the style of music), I just don't like prince's voice.

people look at me in shock... " whaaa?. you don't like purple rain?"

no, no I don't and if that makes me a bad person for not liking something so famous, I'm okay with that.

or another example.. people might not like michael jackson because some people strongly believe he did bad things in his life and should have been charged.

so I'm just wondering what the reasons are behind hating elvis

is it simply because you don't like rock and roll or something else

Can't please you this time. There's only love in my heart for you.
The day you agree with me in everything, our friendship is in jeopardy.
Now talk Arnica to me. Are you eating it, rubbing it, applying it?.

Back to the King. Well, he's Da King!, that's all. Hate to rub it in. Hahaha.

This. Beautiful and touches my soul: "My first words in English, were from his records."

Silly joke: Did you know that Elvis the pelvis has a cousin named Enis the-------

Not silly: I can recall the exact location I was in, and who I was with, when the tragic news was broadcast over the radio.
Then, by sheer coincidence, I was in Memphis during the ten-year anniversary of the passing of Elvis. What an experience!!! Huge Caddies, I mean boats, driving around town with Elvis memorabilia hanging on them and PA systems blasting his songs from the cars.

Rock n' roll made me the fighter I am; I've saved my life this way and - hopefully - helped others' lives, too. A tremendous Thank You From the Soul to rock and roll!

The King is dead; Long live the King!
Jews, you say? He wasn't, but I am. Thus, Z'TL: May his memory be for a blessing.
And indeed, it is.

Enjoy this, pirilin...and notice that - yes! - Elvis is singing to a mujer major la bruja!

So the story, narrated by the Memphis Mafia (Elvis friends) says:

One day Elvis decided to help his country even more and wanted to go to the White House.
To talk about an official business with the President.

They hopped in the limo Washington bound. Elvis was High Robin Fly!.
Next stop, the White House. Unanounced. Just crashed in.
And asked to see the President. Nixon was the prez then.

The President replied he was busy with forigner(sp) dignataries.
He could meet with him in four hours.

Elvis went into the Oval Office, sat in the Prez chair, planted both boots in the desk, and started giving away whatever he found, to his friends.
They kept returning the items, only to have them back in their hands.

Prez Nixon finally arrives, and greets him. Still seating in the Presidential chair.
"What can I do for you", Nixon asks. "I'm here to help my country in an official capacity."

President Nixon opened the ledger with the 103 badges the federal goverment had at the time, an asks him to pick one.
Elvis picks to be a DEA agent. "I need to help with the drug problem. It's an epidemic."
So Nixon officially appoints him as a DEA agent. Badge and papers too. He's a real agent now.

They take pics together. Which I happen to have some, and Elvis an auntorage(sp) hop in the limo back to Memphis.

While in the limo, Elvis decides to write a letter to the President to thank him. Since he forgot. And send it back rightaway with one of the members in the limo.
When he finishes the letter, it's illegible, nobody could understand a word.
They beg him not to send it. He sends one of them to take the letter to President Nixon anyway.

He travels around the country in his tours, and by himself, and goes to many many schools to talk about the dangers of using drugs. All drugged out himself.
Apparently, he never thought of himself as a drug addict. Since they were all prescribed by doctors.

On one ocassion(sp) one of his friends steals jewelery, pictures and personal items from him.
He gets info as a DEA agent, and the guy is about to leave in a plain, when he gets to the airport.

Runs to the gate, which is already closed, and demands to have it open, badge in hand.
"You are Elvis Presley." "DEA Agent Elvis Presley. Open the gate and stop that plane."

He stopped the plane. Went in, handcuffed the robber and took him out. Got the robber's bag from luggage and out they went to the limo.

Before getting into the limo, he removed the handcuffs. And started beating the guy silly.
When he got enough, he let him go without pressing charges.

I have one better about Priscilla and her lover, but I'm out of time.

He was a real character in his personal life too.

Cheers.
