So son number 2 went back to hospital with mania and psychosis 10 days after taking lsd. Lamictal did not hold him together in hindsight, he started to unravel at the beginning of July but as he is only 18 I am only beginning to see the pattern. He is still delusional but not bad enough to keep him hospitalized, even though he appears unpredictable and on occasions aggressive.
Son number one is taking lithium following his extreme manic and psychotic event that lasted for three and a half months and ended in early June. I am beginning to see a change in him over the past week, does lithium prevent mania and psychosis?

Hi caringmum. I'm sorry that both of your sons are dealing with bipolar disorder. Have their doctors discussed medication changes/additions?

I don't think anyone can answer your questions "in general". I know some people do well on just a moodstabilizer like Lamictal or Lithium, while others need an additional meds like an antipsychotic. Or maybe the choice of moodstabilizer or dose isn't ideal.

I hope both your sons stabilize soon.

Lithium is the gold standard in treating mania. It does not work well for everyone though.

Hi caringmum,
Good info in above posts. I haven't much to add.

I am sorry for what you and your sons go through. You obviously care very much. Just want to lend support and want to thank you for continuing to be a loving mum.
