My bipolar boyfriend is in therapy. I’ve been asked to go to a session as collateral. I know the basics. I am not the patient and all that. But what should I expect from this? Since I am not the patient I’m not quite sure why I’m going. Thanks.

Hi Jessicake,
Welcome to PC! ![]() I don't know what a "collateral visit" is? It would be hard to know why you are being asked to attend. I hope you find the support and the information you may be seeking. Please do make yourself at home. I hope to see you around the forums. ![]() WC

as far as i know a collateral is when a person in therapy is given a letter (or told face to face) from a person close to them, detailing the damages their behaviour has caused in their lives. ie - their illness's (or addiction's) "collateral damage"
so although there may be some therapeutic benefit to you in getting out hurts and frustrations, i think the goal is for him to realise the extent of the damages his illness/behaviour has caused. |
