Has anyone ever gone to the ER for suicidal thoughts, not an attempt?

Maybe call your pdoc? Every time I have been ip or iop my pdoc has referred me (once even as a direct admit).

The one thing I hate about the hospital is I don't get my meds for days, so I go through complete med withdrawal until I'm finally able to see a psychiatrist. I hate that the most. Last time it was six days!

I forgot about that. That is the worst the only med I could get last time was ativan. At least I had that available.

The only place I have not gotten my meds is staying at the police station overnight. Unless the pdoc wants you off whatever you are on but there is always a pdoc at the IP facility here on call who approves you coming into IP so they have meds or no meds ready for you depending on the situation.

That must be truly horrible being in limbo like that. So not right.

I thought my experience as a psych patient was the norm. But maybe not.
I’m ip approx 4 times per calendar year and I always go ip because of sui planning (or mania). If I waited until an attempt it would be too late. I’m what the staff affectionately refer to as a ‘frequent flier’.
I’ve never had to go via ER. I would’ve if I was needing a weekend admission but I’ve always gone ip Mon to Fri. Instead the community psych nurse and my pdoc sort it out with the admissions office. I am usually admitted straight into the ward up to 48hrs after I’m first actively suicidal.
Meds are written within hours of admission and I’ve never skipped a dose in hospital. That’s ridiculous having to wait days.
It really is a shame to read how others have had bad experiences. I do hope people don’t lose hope.

About meds they actually took away my birth control. The doctor said "why would you need that in the hospital?" I take it for medical reasons, not to get down with everyone in the ward haha (Shouldn't a doctor understand that? People think women's bodies are a joke). Once when I was in severe pain and couldn't walk they refused to take me to see a medical doctor...... There's definitely room for improvement in certain hospitals.

All the professionals ever did was call me a time waster, tell me to go home, then tell tales on me to the useless counsellor I had at the time.

Ugh, someone I love was called a time-waster and he's gone now. No one should say that to you. Sorry that it had to happen. You have a lot of value on this earth and have done so well by staying alive.

Have done that years ago. They can't seem to bounce you fast enough. Severe bed shortage and lack of funding in the public sector.
