I think I've made a thread about this before, but I haven't had my period in a year. I take haldol. I was wondering how many other ladies on APs have stopped having their periods.

I stopped having mine when I was on invega. It raised my prolactin sky high. I don’t know if haldol does the same. I know risperdal and latuda can as well.

Mines has always been irregular anyways but mines are few and far between now a days I have put it down to the mood stabiliser Depakote as I have changed my anti-psychotic from Serequol to Aripiprazole (sp) but I'm very irregular. This year alone I've have my period 4 times. But it's been so heavy I can't leave the house as I'm having to sit on towels at times. I leaked in public and that's haunted me continually

I havent had a period in forever. I thought it was because I have the mirena IUD. (Has progesterone in it.)

Not me. I'm on Seroquel, have been for awhile. Oh, and I took Abilify for ages, didn't lose it on that either, and I was on a variety of increasing dosages before the pdoc gave up on it.

Breastfeeding stopped my periods for 9 months (because of the high pro-lactin).

How old are you? Are you normal weight? Have you gained or lost weight rapidly or started dieting or exercising a lot? All those things can affect your cycle too. Do you take any type of hormonal birth control? Any chance of pregnancy? Were your cycles regular before the Haldol? Do you have kids? Having a child unfortunately shortened my cycle length by 5 days once it started up again after nursing, but for one of my sisters, her cycles were just crazy unpredictable after kids.

I'm on extended cycle birth control meaning I have one every three months like clockwork, I know when I was reading about Latuda and Seroquel both of them can cause missed periods. Haldol can too I think. I still get a period by mine are usually light and spotty given my birth control.

I suggest that you have a prolactin level done. If you feel uncomfortable having your psychiatrist order it, consider having your gynecologist order it. Elevated prolactin levels are possible on most antipsychotics, though Risperdal and Invega are most notorious for causing that. I think 1st generation antipsychotics are more notorious for causing this than 2nd generations, with the exception of Risperdal and Invega.

Are you also having lactation (leaking breasts)? That often happens with high prolactin levels. Mine leaked so badly that I had to put pantyliners in my bras. I also eventually had a pituitary microadenoma discovered from an MRI. All of these issues went away a while after discontinuing Risperdal and Invega.

It is possible that your lack of periods has nothing to do with medications. To get to the bottom of it, do consult with a gynecologist if your psychiatrist doesn't investigate it, or if your prolactin levels are normal.

The one and only good that came from me experiencing prolonged elevated prolactin levels was that my breasts increased in size. I went from a B cup to a C cup bra.

My periods are perfectly normal nowadays and have been for about 8 years on my current mix, which includes high dose Tegretol XR, low dose Lamictal, and med-high dose Seroquel XR.

I'm 36 and normal weight, though I do lose weight and gain weight rapidly. Not drastic changes though. I'm not on hormonal birth control. I have one 7 year old daughter but didn't breast feed. Before the haldol my periods were mostly regular, though sometimes I would skip a month. I can't be pregnant. I would have had the baby already lol.

I have to mention this to my pdoc during my next appointment. I don't mind not having my period, but it can't be healthy.

No lactation thankfully.

I'll mention it to my pdoc and maybe he'll order a prolactin level test.

Yes, this was a positive for me after having my daughter. When my milk first came in, I practically looked like a porn star. It normalized, then of course, my daughter started preferring to nurse from one side, so I had one breast a full cup size bigger than the other, even after trying all the tricks to feed her from the other side.

I think I actually got B cups while nursing; then they went down to AA and stayed there. Pretty demoralizing.

Other things besides psych meds can cause high prolactin levels too. I can't remember them all, but tons of people had high prolactin issues on the fertility forum I belonged to while trying to conceive and then while pregnant. There were all kinds of issues, but I don't remember them any more.

And if it's non-psych medication related, it is a good idea to get your gynecologist to check out all the possibilities. Likely, it is from the psych meds, but just in case it's not, cover all the bases.

I’ve had one period in at least 2 years. I saw my gp about it a year ago and she was unconcerned.

Mine stopped after I got the mirena IUD. Prior to that my period was heavy bleeding for 3-4 months straight.
Best to get it checked out. You’re young. It’s probably nothing but best to be sure.
