I haven't had a manic episode in years. My main problems are paranoia and depression.

Do you think it's possible to successfully stop taking a mood stabilizer...tapering off with the advice of a doctor, of course? I don't think I need it anymore.

Why would you stop when it has kept manic episodes at bay so well? All the more reason to stay with treatment.

I felt the same way when I was on Lamictal, also a mood stabilizer.

That was until I was forced to stop it due to an allergic reaction after 4 years of taking it. Right away my depression came back after 4 years of being stable. I'm still depressed 15 months later.

It's obviously working for you too so why stop it?

Every time I have seen someone come off of a medicine that works. It never ends well just my two cents.

It sounds like Lamictal has been helping to stabilize you?

We are all different, so we cannot accurately predict the consequences of discontinuing any med.

This is a topic best discussed by you and your pdoc.
I hope you can get this sorted out.

Stopping mood stabilizers is a common mistake that a lot of us make. After all, we're well, so why take medication, right?

Nope. The fact that you're even thinking about going off meds is a little suspect...are you sure you're not ramping up just a little? Mania doesn't always announce itself with fireworks, sometimes it just sneaks up on you. But even if you're fairly level, you still have the paranoia and depression to contend with and the mood stabilizer probably helps with that too, even though you may not know it.

Don't stop taking your MS. You may be one of the lucky ones who never has another manic episode, but don't count on it.
