I graduated in 2013 for reference so not to long ago; but even at my large school and a psychology class and a health class it wasn't discussed; I think maybe depression and maybe anxiety were hinted at but not even psychology was it discussed. We had countless drug seminars and that was rapidly talked about; but think thing was most people I would hope are smart enough to stay away from drugs; but it would been nice to talk about what could happen to the brain further on down the line. I think grey matter was discussed in Anatomy but that wasn't a clear indicator either.

Graduated high school in 2009. YES!
Only in elementary school... there was a support group for the kids who's parent were divorcing or divorced to talk so we all felt included. Nothing in middle school or high school. Lots of talks about dont do drugs, except marijuana was up for debate if over a legal age. A whole push about dont drink and drive. They did breathalyzers to get into prom. My high school had a handful of kids addicted to opioids also, and it was a middle-upper class economy in New England. Also, we were all aware of add and adhd, because lots of kids my age grew up getting over prescribed. But we never talked about it amongst ourselves. |

I graduated in 1985 and it wasn’t discussed in middle or high school. In high school I was in therapy and medicated for depression and in a specialized program for an eating disorder and it still wasn’t explained to me in the way it would be today.
Kudos on saying yes to your reunion. I hope you have a great time. |

I don`t remember any discussions about mental illness when I was in high school,. There were presentations on drugs and alcohol though. I think I went through my first depression in junior high but I couldn`t put a name on it. Mental illness really manifested itself in my twenties. It all started with OCD and an eating disorder. Later I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Later I was diagnosed with bipolar 2 and panic disorder. I think awareness about mental illness would have made a difference when I was first becoming ill. Things are better than they used to be where it concerns mental illness but as all of us here know there is still a stigma attached to mental illness. That`s why it was so difficult for me to ask for help and I think awareness would help other people not to be ashamed to ask for help.
