The term triggers is new to me.
I've been really struggling lately and i cant shake the thought that certain external things have been sending me into the dark place. Not like making me depressed, but i mean sending me from either a hypomanic or somewhat normal state to very quickly into the dark place.
Up until now i assumed my mood would tank first then i would feel like everything was a "trigger". But now i'm wondering if that's the other way around.
Can triggers trigger depressive episodes, hypomanic episodes, mixed, or all of the above?
Application is BP2 for me.

thoughts?
thanks
Thanks for this!

all of the above
for example my triggers are not sleeping, drug use, and not taking meds and they all could trigger a depressive, mixed, or manic episode
kind of a different way of saying "cause"

I think triggers can be very personal and individual. I think this is why it is so important to validate and respect someone when they say they are triggered. It doesnt mean triggers can be eliminated or that everyone has to modify their behavior around someone's triggers but being sensitive and trying to avoid them can help.

My triggers in no particular order are:
- poor sleep
- extended family ‘shenigans’
- anniversaries of deaths of loved ones
- my children (I love them dearly but they stress me)
- talkback radio
Etc.

It’s important to figure out what triggers you. In my case, getting on top of things early is the difference whether I end up ip or not.

Triggers are basically any event that upsets your natural state and causes an adverse reaction mentally, emotionally, or physically.

That sounds really technical but really I totally made it up (but it’s all true!)

Perfect answer. It is best we learn our individual triggers so we can achieve and hopefully maintain stability. Of course Bipolar sometimes has a mind of its own and episodes hit us no matter what we do.
