I posted about a month ago about my psychiatrist starting me on Rexulti. I'm glad to say it has been going very well so far. I've noticed that it works very similarly to how Zoloft used to work when I first took it 5 years ago. Even though the Zoloft seems to do nothing now my doctor has me take a low dose of it. I'm wondering if other people take their Rexulti with and antidepressant or without? I would love to not take the Zoloft anymore but not sure if I need it still to get the best results. Any input would be so helpful.

I used to take rexulti with lexapro. Now I take rexulti with Zoloft.

If I’m remembering right, rexulti is “supposed” to be used as an add-on to an antidepressant. (That’s how it’s marketed, whether you or I agree with that statement or not.) It’s not FDA approved for treating bipolar, but it works for me. I just get voices and visions sometimes while on it, as well as paranoia, but nothing too overwhelming. I’m feeling fine now.

It’s chemically really similar to abilify, so even though rexulti is marketed as an add-on med, I bet that people take it without an antidepressant since people take abilify without an antidepressant.
Thanks for this!

Thanks bluebicycle! That's very helpful. I feel concerned about taking the Zoloft because it's the med that I took when I had my first obvious mania. I'm worried it messes with my mood in a negative way. I guess if it can't be taken alone that I could try another antidepressant too.

I take a low dose of Rexulti everyday for a year and a half. It seems to put my psychosis to sleep and also I sleep well on it most days. If not I add a small dose of olanzapine prn. I was on it with wellbutrin and that got me out of a deep depression but I stayed long term depressed and quit the wellbutrin. That improved my anxiety and didn't worsen my depression.

At the moment I am dealing with a number of painful conditions, which adds to my depression. I gained some weight on Rexulti (10 pounds) but then lost 15 so I am less than when I started it. I am hoping it doesn't mess up my metabolism the way olanzapine does.

We will see.

Sorry to hear you're dealing with physical problems too. That must be hard to not feel depressed when you're in pain. I already take seroquel which caused a ton of weight gain. Rexulti hasn't made it worse yet. I don't like the Zoloft though so I'm trying to get off it but not sure it's a good idea.
Thanks for this!

Thanks for replying. Has your experience with the Rexulti been while taking an antidepressant or without? Trying to figure out it helps on its own or if it works best as an add on. I'm taking Zoloft but want to stop taking it if possible.

I also take Wellbutrin but I started them separately for different reasons.
