What is your favorite coping mechanism?

Mine: watching random YouTube videos. Just click a random one on the front page and go down the rabbit hole of YouTube videos. Lots of new and interesting things to learn. Or I just click a random Wikipedia page to read. This mechanism works for when I’m depressed or angry.

It depends on what I need to cope with.

Anxiety - A Dysfunctional Thought Record, "times out", grounding techniques, visualizing/planning situations and responses in advance...

Depression - Trying to be at least minimally productive (creating doable "To Do" lists which I share with hubby, then emailing him as I achieve items), seeing my psychiatrist more, writing, sometimes baking or trying to get out of the house to do something pleasant...

Hypo/mania - Taking prn, "laying low"/not fueling the fire, seeing psychiatrist more...

mine: updating my music playlist!. some days I think I have everything I could possibly imagine, then I hear a song and think oooooo, I need that, and have lots of fun trying to find it for my collection.

music, movies, fidget spinner, you tube, forums, podcasts, going outdoors, cleaning and coloring. they all help in some way or another when needed. also, grounding. helps tremendously.

Spending time in nature, exercise, music (listening or playing) are probably the top 3. It does depend, though on the situation.

Hobbies, cooking, music, tv shows that I like. Shopping for fabric or patterns that I want to sew. (Or create wish lists if I don’t have the money.) If the weather is good we’ll get out and take pics. Or I’ll create art from old pics. Try to treat myself later in the month so I don’t feel low. Tweak meds if needed. Basically keep my life on even keel if possible.

If I only need a thought disruptor I sing a song to myself over and over until the thoughts go away. If I need an activity I usually read, write or watch a tv show. I also like to watch birds. I have a clear bird feeder that attaches to the window in my living room. They fly in and out all day long so it is a constant show.

writing in my journal helps me at times. unfortunately, if I'm in bad shape or cycling, it can be hard to put my thoughts in order.

I play a lot of mindless-type videogames. The kind that don't take a lot of mental energy but a good amount of the mechanics to really enjoy and benefit. The two I am completely addicted to are Adventure Capitalist and Clicker Heroes. Both are a click-wait-click some more /idle game. Adventure Capitalist is nothing fancy -- you own "8 business" that collect money over time. All you do is click and upgrade your business for more gold, speed, and buy bonuses. Clicker Heroes is a similar, but more active and exciting variation. You kill monsters, collect gold, and try to get to the deepest level you can. What I like about that game is the soft-resets every so often. When it gets too hard, you start over but with a lot of benefits gained from the previous run. -- I feel ridiculous when I admit to people I play them, but I am so addicted to them lol.

Sorry, I know you asked about coping mechanisms and I just gave a plug for two games.. lol, but it's what I've been doing the past week. You can find them on Kongregate. They are absolutely free.
Thanks for this!

Great question!

Going for a long walk. Sometimes I brood and think through things, sometimes I just space out, either way it clears my head, gets me into nature -something larger than myself- and releases some endorphins.

A couple people mentioned walking, being out in nature, and yoga, I'll add those to my list also because I really enjoy that as well. Nothing helps me organize my thoughts and relax better than taking a nice long walk

I like walks too, but its impossible in the winter. That's why I also like watching a movie or calling a friend.
