I’ve been considering going back to college to finish my degree. I dropped out in 2006 then went back and got my child development associates. I ultimately wanted to do social work but I just don’t know if I can, but I still want to work in the field. I’m considering an associate in human services from the local college. I already have a head start with 18 of the required hours.
I just worry I can’t do it!

If you are good at tests maybe try to test out of some classes. My only advice is start as part time.

I think it's fantastic you are planning for your future. I was on long term disability for almost 10 years. I never thought I'd be capable of working again. My psychiatrist had different ideas. He nudged me to get another grad degree and from there I took baby steps to make it back to full time professional employment. I'm a cancer researcher. I'm retired now and I write books about navigating life with a severe mental illness.
I think you will do great. |

I achieved 2 degrees with honors and worked for 17 years in psych hospitals . Focus on not getting to exhausted or stressed as both really increase the severity of the Bipolar episodes . Good luck with your dreams, you can do it.

Why are you worried that you can't do it?
![]() I think if you put your mind to it and tell yourself that you CAN do it, then you are more likely to succeed. Also, I recommend for you to talk to your therapist about forming a "game plan" around how you're going to do this. I think everyone with mental illness should develop strategies for coping with academic stress, because I know firsthand how much strategies would've helped me. I speak as someone who has a bachelors in engineering and masters in computer science. If you need any advice though... feel free to shoot me a PM and I'll be glad to help. ![]() |

I plan on taking 1-2 classes for now. It’ll be difficult with my work schedule and also keeping up with therapy
