I’m at work (chill, it’s downtime.) and I can’t stop
Worrying about my granny. She really scared me last night. She stayed in bed til 6pm and hasn’t taken her meds or drank anything. She’s 80. I went into the kitchen after she was up and she said she felt “faint.” I immediately had her sit down.

She was about to drink tea but I told her not drink water.’I was making her some iced water when she suddenly passed out. He face was droopy on one side and I was certain she was having a stroke! I kept her upright and she started vomiting but wasn’t responsive. I couldn’t reach a phone so I pressed her medical alert necklace. Once I did that she started moaning and gasping. I was terrified!

I eventually got my phone and called ems. The medical alert company had already called them too. Thank God! They got there and by that time she was fine! Sitting up and alert. They advised her to drink water, eat light and rest in bed for the night. They walked her to her bed. I got her all changed into a nightgown and cleaned her up.

Once I knew she was ok I ran out and got some ginger ale.and gave her that and some
Saltines. She wanted to sit up and drink so I helped her moved to her chair. By about 10:30 pm she was sleepy so I helped her to bed. Whew....I
Was so scared. Seemed like she was passed out forever. I thought something really bad was happening. Still not sure if dehydration causes this. Sounds more like a mini stroke.

I’m just so thankful
I was there when it happened!!!!!!

Sorry to hear that about your grandma. I think she should get checked out for having a stroke if no one has checked her out yet. My grandma had a mini one years ago and ended up okay (i.e., without any permanent damage), but she has been on blood thinners ever since so that she doesn't get another one. But my uncle's second wife had a stroke @ 50 yrs old and she's now permanently disabled (can't move anything on her right side). That's why it's so important to pinpoint what went on with your grandma. I don't want to see anyone end up like that because it's awful.

I hope your grandma is doing okay so far today. Keep us updated.

Hi Hallie,

I am sorry you both had to go through this;yet, you are right, so helpful you were together.

I wonder why EMS did not transport her to the ER to be checked out? They probably explained to you.

Do you have any family to help you in any way?

Please do not hesitate to call EMS again.

Love and Prayers!

Oh, this must be very stressful.
I'd also be very concerned about my loved one.

Is your granny doing better today?

How are you doing tonight?

Thinking of you and of your granny.
Love and Prayers

Wow that is super-stressful, I am glad both of you are doing better.

I don't know the situation with your grandmother.

However, I help out with an 86 year old friend, who has twice gone to the Emergency Room after feeling dizzy and unwell, and it turned out to be dehydration. Check out this page (Q&A: How to Prevent, Detect, & Treat Dehydration in Aging Adults). It explains why dehydration is a problem in the elderly, symptoms, tips to take to prevent, and more. From that page: "How is dehydration diagnosed? For frail older adults, a simple preliminary check, if you’re concerned about dehydration, is to get the older person to drink some fluids and see if they perk up or improve noticeably. (This often happens within 5-10 minutes.) This is not a clinically-proven method, but it’s easy to try. If drinking some fluids does noticeably improve things, that does suggest that the older person was mildly dehydrated."

Did the emergency people give your grandmother water or other liquid and did she get better? If so, this is why the emergency people may have said she was dehydrated and acted the way they did. They were not uncaring, though it would have helped if they had explained this to you and your grandmother.

After I learned about dehydration in the elderly, my friend (who is not frail) several times has said he is getting dizzy and not feeling well, which has been very concerning to me. I have given him water and each time within 2-10 minutes, he has perked up and was OK and felt well. I have monitored him afterwards, and he was fine. Monitoring afterwards helps, just in case it may be more than simple dehydration.

Again, I am not a doctor and am not diagnosing your grandmother.

For caring your grandmother, you might check out other pages at Better Health While Aging That has helped me.

Best to both of you!

I mean I know she was dehydrated because she hasn’t drank anything since the night before and she was just getting going at 6pm! I made her drink after they left and she started feeling better.

They were very nice. I never thought they werenuncaring.
