Questions...memory

I was just thinking that my memory often isn’t that good. I think that is related to bipolar and CPTSD and also possibly some of the meds I have taken

My question is ... and I apologize if this has recently been discussed elsewhere.... how “good” is your memory?

I feel quite fortunate. My memory is better than I'd like it to be!
I have heard of many people feeling their memory is impaired.

Hi Fuzzy, Sorry to hear your memory is not that good. Mine is very good. People remark on it. It used to be excellent but i'm 53 now and i've noticed a decline. I'm sure mine is due to age. I forget show-biz names especially, so nothing super important. Keeping lists on my phone is helpful.

My memory in general is too good if that makes sense ???? There are many things that I wish would fade away or become too blurry to care about or more so get upset over.. So those memories are more ptsd than anything else..

But I have huge gaps in my memory of pretty important things.

I think Bipolar brains are just wired differently , not in a bad way just in a different way

I keep a lot of lists. I have lists telling me where to find the lists!
I am trying to be more organized and I am putting lists of various topics in one notebook in order to keep them organized.

I also like to keep some lists on my phone.

I'm with Christina. It's all over the map. I remember almost none of my childhood.School stuff was always easy to memorize, for some reason. I don't know why. Long time ago, though.

I remember a lot of my most painful things exquisitely, sadly.


My short-term memory has gotten much worse in recent years. It is terrible now. Just terrible.

I don't want to upset or trigger anyone, but there is some worrisome recent research that some of the medications we at times take do increase dementia risk--a lot. It is still early days in all this, but it is a concern for me, since I suspect I have been on one of the culprits for more than ten years. Nothing to do about it now. And besides, what are folks like us supposed to do? Not take meds? That works for some of us, but I tried it once and it was a catastrophe. Not ever an option for me.

Besides, I am on tons of stuff and still psychotic!!!


Hugs and love!! Enjoy it while you got it. Life is short. Go for a walk. Look at some flowers. Tell someone you love them. Write a note or letter. Today. This whole big thing is all just a loan, anyway.

Do you think your short-term memory might be affected more by meds you are taking at the time, as opposed to memory changes caused by past med use? Maybe both? I know it can be difficult to know; yet, sometimes we can see fluctuations as we change meds.

I took lithium for just several months and I was "lost" when I was on it. Short-term memory was zilch. It was horrible. I know it is different for everyone.

As for the potential long-term effects of benzos, I had been on a benzo for over 30 years (daily). I find the research a bit concerning; yet, I also know there aren't many other choices, as I have many med allergies, so many of the alternatives now used in place of benzos are not an option.

it's very interesting to me that after 30 years of daily use of a benzo, I felt zero withdrawal upon stopping the med. It was very surprising. I realize it is unusual. I was very fortunate. My pdoc could not believe it.

I never remember the names of new people I meet or movies, etc... But my memory of experiences and conversations are excellent. I could give you back a conversation like a court reporter!

(I didn’t think I’m bipolar, but maybe I am as new doc gave me meds for bipolar without giving me any diagnosis)

I'd forgotten I have a memory glitch.

It seems I can recall far too much or not well under certain circumstances.

I can relate to that

My memory is awful, but like others have said it remembers certain events a little too well.
