Aside from meds, I can tolerate benzos only.

I was wondering what your favourite comfort foods are, and do these vary according to your mood state? Chocolate is one for me (I can't have much of it though) And ice cream, crisps, all the unhealthy stuff. And strawberries I also find some of these calm my severe anxiety down sometimes (and sometimes even help calm anger) For the past week or so, I have had none of these, and my mood and anxiety have overall been worse.

Do you have other things helpful for severe anxiety and depression that you can suggest? I think someone posted a link for DBT in someone else's thread. If someone could post that or similar in my thread, the link with an explanation etc, it would be helpful to me (unable to access other people's threads and the check in thread at times)

Hi Fuzzybear. I definitely do have some comfort foods. I like the ones you mentioned, but mine lean more on the pastry side of things. I suppose my # 1 has always been vanilla cream filled donuts, but these are not really available in my new country. They do have donuts, but not vanilla cream filled. They do have cream horns that I always also liked, but the ones here have cream that is less sweet and vanilla flavored than the ones in my old part of the US. They do have good pastries here. Lately, I've been into a pistachio cream confection. Or, the many things I bake homemade. I like pretty much everything. As for other things, I'm the least picky eater that I know. I think few Americans dislike Italian comfort food options (pizza, lasagna, etc.). I like them, but have been trying to cut down, lately. What I do also LOVE are vegetables! I eat a lot, and that luckily does me good.

Drinking used to be a very negative comfort beverage for me. I do still enjoy wine and beer, but in moderation.

A basic overview of DBT coping skills can be found at DBT: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills, Techniques, What it Treats I think they can be quite helpful for anyone. Most do require a lot of practice. I confess that I did not fully appreciate "mindfulness" until quite a while after being introduced to the concept.

Thanks Soupe du jour. I also like Italian comfort foods, pizza, lasagna, all of them really. I don't think I've ever tried vanilla cream filled donuts. Maybe I will try that or similar. I've been trying to cut down on some foods lately too though.

I also enjoy wine and also beer sometimes. I try to enjoy it in moderation (usually)

Thanks for the link to the overview of DBT coping skills.

When I was first introduced to ''mindfulness'' (not by a therapist) (and not by anyone here, it was actually someone I didn't like at all, she was never even somewhat nice to me although I did rub her up the wrong way, unintentionally.... she was very easy to rub up the wrong way by anyone who did not fully agree with everything she said. And stroke her ego at all times. She was ''new'' on another forum. I think she had a severe personality disorder, sorry tmi and off topic) I didn't fully appreciate it either.

eta, off topic, re that person. I later found out that literally many had the same reaction to this person as I did. I don't like sharing this sort of stuff but maybe it's part of my healing to not censor everything I say. In therapy I tried not to censor myself but the therapists censored me when I tried to open up.

I think I'm appreciating mindfulness more recently. I don't know much about it though.

I love vegetables also, particularly broccoli, asparagus, beans, peas (including sugar snap peas) potatoes, tomatoes, carrots... I can't think of one I don't like. Oh, tomatoes are fruits I remember now. I don't find many of these satisfying on their own though. Maybe some of them might go with something less healthy as a snack I'm also not a picky eater and I can't think of anyone I know who is less of a picky eater (Papa bear doesn't like anything spicy or with mint in it. He doesn't like ice cream with any mint in for example)

Well then you and I could be veggie eating buddies!

My husband likes most vegetables, but not broccoli, cooked cauliflower (he'll eat fresh cauliflower), certain types of greens (beet, collard), or asparagus (this makes his joints hurt). He hates coriander leaves. I like all of these a lot. Also, he is allergic to garlic. Ugh! Anyway, he's easier than his sister and nephew. When they came over they said they wouldn't eat raw onion, any form of cucumber, or peppers. His nephew actually hates all vegetables. Once his nephew cooked for us for a few days and the meals were just meat, cheese, and bread. After a day, I had to make a salad. The only veggie around was carrots, so carrot salad it was. Of course he didn't eat it, but my husband was happy for it.

I love gummy bears, and always have a big tub of them by my bed

my cookie jar is always full, usually I have chocolate ones or ginger biscuits

I also like chocolate (especially mint aero), and most flavoured crisps (potato chips), they have some here in the UK called monster munch and I love the roast beef variety.

Being veggie eating buddies sounds good

I would hate to be allergic to eating garlic, I like that a lot. Asparagus is one of my favourites!

I haven't had coriander leaves for a while, I'll have to think about that! I like those a lot too especially in a sauce.

Hating all vegetables, that must be rough. A relative once said I would become a vegetarian (wrong). I like meat and fish too much

I wouldn't like just meat, cheese and bread at all either. Glad you made a salad!

I haven't tried gummy bears though (I like the look of them though)

My favorite comfort foods are ice cream (birthday cake flavor), circus animal cookies (the kind with frosting and sprinkles) and of course pizza

I have celiac as well as a dairy allergy, so I don't really have comfort foods anymore... which is honestly for the best. I'm way healthier physically now because of the allergies, ironically.

But one thing I loooove is Yogi Tea's Honey Lavender Stress Relief tea. That stuff is just yummy and chills me right out if I'm having really mild anxiety.

You can download some DBT worksheets at DBT Worksheets | Therapist Aid. They help teach coping skills.

I have a terrible time with anxiety too. The pdoc prescribed clonazepam, but I don't think it's doing much good.

When I feel anxious, I want to eat as a soothing mechanism. I try not to keep any junk food in the house though. Sometimes though I will sneak out and get a candy bar. Doesn’t help the anxiety bit it sure tastes good.

Deep breathing helps me. Stop for 3 minutes and breath deeply. Add an affirmation like "I inhale peace, I exhale anxiety.

I hope something I wrote helps, fuzzy bear.

Pretty much any kind of pastry/baked goods/desserts/candy bars. I have a major sweet tooth.

For savory things, it would be chips, buffalo wings, macaroni and cheese, hamburger helper, chicken pot pie, lasagna, chicken parmesan, homemade spaghetti and meatballs w/ spicy Italian sausage and Italian bread, chili, pizza, grilled ham and cheese

lol Yeah I think about food a lot, but I try to eat healthy and only eat this stuff on occasion

When I'm anxious, I go to a Korean barbecue restaurant (before the pandemic). The sizzling of the meat on the grill soothes me. I love both Korean and Japanese food. Hot pot, miso soup, and seaweed soup are my favorite comfort food. Oh, and plus the quattro formaggi pizza from the Italian restaurant in my neighborhood.
